    Default Exhaust heat wrap

Anyone use them on their car? I bought some in an attempt to reduce heat in the engine bay, but later found out that It can cause the exhaust manifold to crack as it prevent the exhaust manifold from cooling down properly. Is this true has anyone experience this?

    Thanks

mixed opinions on it, like turbo bags, some say it prevents the manifold/dump from cooling down too quickly and cracking, some say it traps heat in and causes it to heat up too much.

I'm using some on my stainless dump pipe. ive heard that when the metal cools, it sweats and it can cause rusting. The topic has been talked about a fair bit on this forum. follow this link..

hi-temp coatingon the interior of the pipe is probably a better solution - the more heat that stays in the gas the more gas flow hence more boost (sorry fo sweeping generalisation),

s/steel sweating? huh? sure the wrap can collect moisture if the car sits for a considerable period of time and you get a rusty surface

I was going to use it to wrap the original cast iron manifold as I don't have the original heat shield anymore. From what I've read they even more prone to cracking than steel extractors?? is this right?

Now I'm thinking of using it to wrap my stainless steel intercooler outlet pipe instead this would work the same wouldn't it? ie shield the intercooler pipe from exhaust and under bonnet heat?

Sorry, i meant to say that normal mild steels can rust. i wrapped stainless, thinking it should be ok. (not rusting)

Tom86 - what you can do is bend up a sheet of steel and fabricate your own heat shield. Then stick on some of the reflective foil heat tape.
I've also put the normal heat wrap tape on my painted mild steel intercooler piping and its fine. been like that for over 2 years without a problem.

i have some heat wrap on my mild steel dump pipe, hasnt been there for even a year yet so cant comment on it reducing the life of the pipe. yes alot of people have different opinions, mine is that it cant do too much damamge, if it cracks ill weld it, if it breaks ill get another one
and about the rust, mild steel is gonna rust anyway. if i wasnt a tight arse id get the dump coated and then wrap it.

    its good stuff,

    rewelding isnt much,

its worth every cent.....on a mates datto 1600 with L20b, extractors heat wrapped...you can hold the runners, nice n cool,

especially when you have webber carbys sitting above hot exh manifold,.....

oh and ive got 20mtrs of the stuff, (BOILER TAPE...even thicker and better!)...just got to find it for when i do my new dump pipe,

Where did you get it, as my inlet temps are pretty high considering the fact that my intake is on the same side as the exhaust.

Aussie exhausts say that heat wrapping their dump pipes will void the warranty on them. Obviously they think it can have a detrimental effect?

i can understand that that using heat tape could cause premature cracking on dump/mani, but i still recon a few years of better/cooler performance is worth teh $50 to have a part rewelded!.....

but i have never experienced a crack yet....

yeah, but then again, its a tight fit, and 2J's will do that to ya

i was gonna wrap my dump pipe while i had it out of the car, but couldnt sort it out in time so i didnt bother.

i also removed the turbos' heat shield, and im yet to burn anything :/

wrap will accelerate the rate of rusting of steel manifolds. a friend pulled his off only to find it was the only thing holding the headers together!! it was on for a while but the steel should last ages!

I havent had any probs with it yet. I have a stainless dump pipe that has been ceramic coated and also wrapped. It is a VERY effective way to contain heat !
