Its a US list and U/S here.Originally Posted by lojik
Their model stream is totally different to South Pacific, JDM and Europe.
As an example Toyota made a Celica GT liftback, as feautured in the Complete History of Japanese cars that feautured a twin cam 2TG and then an 18RG, and in Petersons Book of Toyota Page 32 Corona SR5/GT and Page 30 Liftback Celica GT both had 20R engines for the US market.
The 18RG never made it there due to strict pollution and anti smog laws.
The 18RG never made it to OZ either the only units being from API and EKW during the 80's when Modern Motor and Auto Action had hundreds of engines and gearboxes from Containers ex Asia.
Aparts from Rivers GT and my GT and one or two odd imports there are no genuine early 18RG engined GT's in Australia, they are all home made clones.
GT's and the like were not legal to be imported until recent times as they did not comply under ADR's.
You might think this sucks, but if you pull a JDM apart like I have recently in the form of a Datsun 280Z fairlady you will find like the Celica GT river owns and my Corona GT that it has no side intrusion protection as all JDM's just 0.8mm of steel and some trim between you and a tee bone side collision.
So in a side accident we are likely to suffer pretty bad injuiries as the whole side of the car wraps around the tree like a hotdog..
I have driven genuine LHD GT Celicas in Noumea and in Port Vila during the 1980's.
The Hilton GT and Hurrey GT badged Celicas in the 1979 Repco were made up from local models with engines from containers ex Japan like most of the GT look alikes around today.
Its a mute point but an ST with a GT engine does not make a GT neither does putting a GT engine into a Corona make a GT in fact far from it, they are re engineered as a special models.
It will be interesting to see what Rivers GT sells for if and when he does compared with any look alike made up model even with the best of paint and the likes.
A genuine GT falcon is sky high and double the prices of a GT look alike no matter how great the paint.
If price and originality and genuiness is an issue here.
The celica listing is at pains to document the ORIGINAL OEM details of a car, trouble is as I said it only applies to one country and everyone seems to want a car they can't buy here, noticed that?
Rivers GT was an evaluation vehicle and sold with full compliance, my GT was non compliant but it still did not stop AMI selling it to the trade.Ther are however a few ST Celicas with the 2TB and some early GT's from South Pacific, New Guinea, WA and Xmas island imported by private owners as their own property and then disposed of down under.
2 cents.
