could be a number of reasons, anything right down to a bad / broken connection.

If it's any help to you I have a workshop manual for our SV21.

It has a fault finding procedure that covers instruments and also has wiring diagrams.

You can PM me and I will send you copies of the appropriate page(s).

    Cheers,

    Andrew.

    it's broken !

seriously, are u getting a flashing ecu code? if not then it most probably be the gauge, as the ECU will set an error code with no temp sender signal.

else if u are getting a code - check the sender first. from memory on the camry there is a single wire sender in the thermostat housing [dont remeber the colour - RH end of block]. disconnect and measure the resistance from the blade to the block when cold and then again when warmed up. should go from about 1000 ohms to less than 10 when warm. don't disconnect while warming or youll get an ecu code.
    otherwise check wiring.

    cheers,

Most toyota single wire senders (aren't they all??) will have a spade type connector on them.

Most likely problem is the wire is broken, dirty, or disconnected all together.. they're easy for people to bump off accidentally while working around them. 5sfe they have? It should be on the t like water inlet junction on the gearbox end of the block

Check continuity of the wire between the cluster and the sender if it's all plugged in and cleaned up and still doesn't work

the sender is located in what looks like a 1 inch bar that comes out of the RH end of 3SFE. from memory there are two senders there but dont recall what they were.

an ECU code is the ECU light flashing on the dash.. it will flash out a 2 digit number - flash 3 times quickly then 1/2 second break then 5 times quickly then at least a one second break. this is code 35 etc. if it flashes you need to count the code [and there can be more than one] and goto the engine manual for a decode of whats wrong

You short the TE1 and E1 terminals in the Diagnostic Connector (which is located in the back of the engine bay near the wiper motor). You then watch the flashes from the Check Engine light on the dashboard and corrospond those to the workshop manual!

there wasnt a TE1 Terminal. There was a T Terminal, which i shorted to E1, but not luck, no flashing. does the engine need to be running ?

T and E1 then it should be then on yours. You must turn the key to "ignition", or, have the engine running, either way.

    Code 43 is "Starter Signal"
No STA signal to ECU when vehicle stopped and engine running at over 800RPM.
Problem area : Ignition Switch Circuit, Ignition Switch, ECU.

Doesn't sound related to your problem with the gauge.
    Kind Regards,
    Kurt.

    thanks for the help

So possibly the problem would be the instrument cluster ?

This start signal problem, is that the "Start Injector Time SW" ?
