There would be a bucket load of flywheels from 18rc/w50 combinations all over the place at wreckers.
found in all old celicas at least.
I'm transplanting a 1G-GZE into an RN85 (late 1988) 2WD Dual Cab Hilux and I'm told I need a 18RC flywheel out of an early Hilux (around '82 - '86 or thereabouts) to bolt up my Hilux 5 speed.
Is this correct?
If so, where might I find one available as Toyota no longer carry them as a spare part?

I don't think your flywheel choice is really that important. If you can get any flywheel properly bolted up to the back of the engine then it is a simple matter to get a clutch to suit the flywheel and gearbox input shaft. Any decent clutch place should be able to get you one in a matter of days.
If the 18R flywheel fits the 1G crank then that might be one good option, but you could also use a 1G flywheel if you have one.

PS, 18R flywheels should be VERY easy to find at wreckers.

I've been to two wreckers here in the western suburbs of Sydney. No luck at one which was a specialist 4WD place; the other had 18RC flywheels from the Corona (and a selection of other Toyota 'wheels) but the bolt pattern is slightly different.
The 18RC I'm needing is from an early Hilux 4x4 to get the matched up bolt pattern.
I rang three other specialist 4WD Toyota wreckers including Brisbane and the Gold Coast but no luck.
I even rang Toyota but that flywheel has been deleted from spares stock.
OK. Just got off the phone and I've (hopefully) found the unit I'm after. I'll take the spacer off the back of the 1G-GZE and make sure the bolts line up.

If your using a W5* gearbox, and a 1G-W5* bellhousing, shouldnt you use a 1G flywheel? Ive got a 1G-GZE and I'm using the Gen 3 Turbo flywheel with a W55.
Edit - Realised you said Hilux Gearbox - so its not a W5*?

If you can not find a 1G flywheel, a 3Y is very close. You will need a machine shop to create a centreing ring, so the flywheel sits on the stub of the crankshaft. You will also have to have the bolt holes elongated outward by 0.78mm.

I didn't get a flywheel with the unit I purchased as it was an auto originally. And the gearbox is whatever is stock to a RN85 Hilux. I pick up the 18RC flywheel tomorrow so I will be able to check the bolt pattern (it's a 6 bolt).Originally Posted by Spectre

G5* = W5* just with side shifter linkages as far as I know. So I'm pretty sure bellhousings should swap over fine.
I've been lying under a G52 alot recently and looks EXTREMELY similar to a W58 externally. Body, input shaft, output shaft, clutch fork setup etc all look the same.

I can also confirm the 18R flywheel WILL NOT bolt to the 1G crank. The only other flywheel that is compatible is the 3TGTE or if you get desperate the 3Y option may work.
I have located a 2TGE flywheel that has the exact same 6 bolt hole pattern and is 297mm in diameter. Is this a possibility?Originally Posted by Grant

Hi Peter, the 2TG flywheel is somewhat smaller on the clutch friction surface, than either a 1G, or 3T-GTE . The 2TG would utilize a smaller clutch and pressure plate, and would have problems handling the 1G power.

So basically you'll need a 1G/GTE flywheel
3T-GTE, is, as far as i remember, identical to the 1G. Both have full face pressure plates.
