Default Looking to get intercooler on 1990 Celica GT4, need info/help/advice

    Heya,

Im looking at getting a front mount intercooler installed in my 1990 Toyota Celica GT4 in a month or so.

    1. How big will it need to be for the following mods; Engine management system, boost controller, full exhaust & standard internals.
    2. What do you guys recommend for a high pitched blow off valve
    3. What sort of air filters produce what sort of sound. Once again were aiming for a high pitched sucking sound.
    4. Can anybody recommend people to get my intercooler installed with. And also know of any reasonably or cheaply priced places where to perhaps pickup intercooler / piping from.

    Many thanks!
    P.s. Im in QLD/bris

    1) Unless you want to spend big dollars on a brand name cooler, the Hybrid-clone coolers kicking around work pretty well, their only downside being the stupid 3" outlets. Josh made 300rwkw with his 450mm version, although the 600mm version is often just as cheap. Stu has one of them in his GT4.
    2) No idea.
    3) Most pod filters will make the sucking noise. Make sure it gets shielded from the engine bay heat and gets a decent cold air feed, or you'll be down on power.
    4) Once again, no idea, wait for some of the QLD guys to answer.

    1. Just measure up what you can fit behind your front bar. or ask the people you plan to have this installed for you.
With a Group A (carlos saints) front bumper, you will get much better air flow to both your intercooler and radiator.
A 600x300 core will fit. just search the site for Lance's or Classique's cars.

    2. A high pitched blow off valve would have to be the HKS SSQV.

3.The sucking sound will be louder with any type of pod filter. alot of people use K&N, Hks mushroom etc.
I think sound also has alot to do with the turbo itself. A larger aftermarket turbo will give you a big induction noise

    Enjoy

Stick with K&N, or Apexi for the pod filter. Those HKS ones apparently let through a lot more bad stuff

And although the metal Blitz ones look cool, and would probably sound cool, about the only thing they'd be good for stopping is rocks

Yeah stick a 450x300 or 600x300 in. I have a 450x300 which is big enough but if you can get a 600x300 for a similar price why not go bigger. Id look at ebay for the cooler, that's where i got mine from and i'm sure a lot of other people on toymods got theirs from ebay too. Or even look on ebay for a full kit, there was one on a few days ago which went for $600, which is a good deal.
As for air filters, go K&N or apexi, i have an apexi and it seems to work well.
    Good luck!

for front mount intercooler, definatly look into sourcing a GroupA front bar. You will be happy to see the stock one go coz.. 1 the support bar for it huge as (limiting ur space for ur cooler), 2 they let in an awesome amount of air into the engine bay (much needed) 3. your new Group A bar will look tough as, especially with the front mount behind it.
For an engine management system contact stuart (classique71) he is going to be organising a group buy for a Wolf3D V4.

Don't group a bars cost over $1000 all up? Screw that!
Also i think he means he has an engine management system already.

isnt it bad to use a "high pitch BOV" on thes 185s because they are AFM? I assume you want an atmno venting BOV - wont this cause the car to run rich everytimne you back off the throttle and lead towards a whole heap of problems? Not to mention legality issues. anyway, go GrpA front bar and hybid-style cooler. IU also believe there are 2 ways to do the cooler piping - one being more expensive but better for cooling?

Thats the way i did my setup, i have a complete writeup over at ozcelica.
Cost around $500 all up installed. Still don't have a BOV fitted, but looking to use either my r2d2 sard or mr2bpv for those duties.

Response isn't stellar off boost. It is laggy, but once you get going, and keep on boost. Buttloads of power, as proven by my qtr mile time ([email protected])

    As for the questions

    1. how big depends on y our power goals, not much more then 300hp, i'd stick to the 400x300 core. If going for more, go the 600x300

    2. HKS ssqv makes a highpitched noise

    3. Any intake will make the same noise, get a pod filter (i use a HKS mushroom filter)

    4. Any diesel spares place sells piping for cheap, stainless steel places sell stainless. Clamps and silicon can be had from diesel spares place.

lance is on the monsey yet again

Set your power goal - your budget and your idea of Bling verse's zing

Mine with a genuine hybrid core ( not an ebay clone ) cost over $1200 to do - mind you - i made mine from scratch - alot of trial and error went into getting the piping right - which i now have a jig for

if you just want it all for looks and sound - your wasting your time and money ..
