Default 4k running badly...if at all.... help?

Hey fellas, having some problem with my friends ke70 with the ol boat anchor 4k..

basically, one day we were driving along happy happy on our way to the wreckers to do some much loved car fiddling, when disaster struck.. the car died. it would idle.. um.. i guess very rough but as soon as you put load on the engine, or touched the accelerator the engine karked it.

figuring it was probably something simple we towed it back to my place, where after a small amount of deliberation we decided it was the dizzy condensor, so we replaced that.. no good.. then we thought "hmm perhaps its the carby" replaced that.. no good. we replaced:

    spark plugs
    points (0.5mm gap)

also no good.. we did a compression test, 150 across all 4, we checked the timing it was fine.. 10btdc at idle, about 17 or something advanced..

so now we're out of ideas, the vacuum system is a little rooted from the previous owner, if anybody has a decent picture of how it should be, or a vac diagram i can understand (the one stuck in the bonnet makes no sense to me) that would be sweeet.

any ideas and i'll rep u

so dies under load, most likely a vaccum problem !
im gonna do a google search for diagram now..

( is there any major oil leaks or oil problems in engine bay ? )
friends car, his catch can decided to bust open and covered bay with oil, which we think has FUBAR a vaccum line, thats why i ask...

peel off the engine bay one.
blow it up, and print it out full A4 size
get a gregorys and have a read to work out what it is they are talking about
and just start somewhere. you will find the sticker in the bay is the best way of doing it.
because, in that diagram, the little pictures of all the different valves actually correspond to them, so you dont have to know what they are, just what they look like....which you do, coz its in your hand
also, your plug gap should be .8mm
backfiring out of carby is sometimes a cam timing thing...sure you havnt slipped a tooth?

have you checked to see that the fuel filter is not clogged?
checked for huge resistance in the leads?
what do the points look like? do you have the right gap/dwell?

my 3k recently had a problem similar, we found that the leads were shitted and was only running off 2 lol.. also the timing was way out.. but as Munki said, check the leads for spark, especially if they are originals.

resistance on leads should be around 25k ohms

flames coming back out the carby would indicate something's wrong with the cam timing
I doubt a 4k would exactly slip a tooth since it's a chain setup, maybe pop the rocker cover off, turn the motor over by hand and see if all the valves are opening/closing as they should be (in relation to where the rotor button is pointing)

i would be guessing you have a lump of crap stuck in the main jet... so when you touch throttle it goes lean and dies.

but you replaced carby so... either that one is rooted.. or you fuel pump or filter is not happy, or...

check if you get spark when you turn it over. if you have spark, then it's fuel.

alright lads, i'll give all that a go.. the fuel pump seems to be working, we unbolted it and pushed and released the pumpy arm thing and it sure squirts fuel, the filter isnt FULL of fuel but theres definately fuel coming through it.

all the leads are getting spark so i guess we'll just have a fiddle with the carby again.

edit: pulled spark plugs out, most of them have are carboned and blackish, thats lean yeah? maybe we have another screwed carby after all.

black is rich, from unburnt fuel, which turns into carbon.. which is black..

new plugs? clean the ones you have, set them to 0.8gap... etc?
