Default RA28 engine ideas? ive changed my mind again :P

ok well the original idea was to put a 1g-gte into my car but im pretty sure it gonna cost me too much firstly to get into my car but then insurance ontop of that will be a killer. i have also toyyed with the idea of turboing the 18r but once again i think the insurance cost is going to out weigh what power i get from the turbo.
also had the idea of puttin ina commo v6 yea i know lol but my uncle can get vs version for around $200 and help me get it in and stuff plus help me keep it running.(massive commonwehore fan) but i think its going to need to much fab work. any one got any ideas on what i should go for basically i want some cheap power(more than the 18r ) a smallish v6 would be alright but i really dont wanna be hacking up my engine bay except for engine mounts etc so yea just looking at ideas tryin to see if ive overlooked any engines that could be done fr cheaper than what ive mentioned

ps: doesnt have to be a toyota engine but a toyota engine would be the best

seeing as you have a 2TGEU .. turbocharge that and put it in the RA?

A 3TGTE engine of unknown origin?

why not a 1GGE - much like your original choice but not with the turbo insurance problems?

sold most of the parts off the 2tgeu now and it was gone anyways wouldve needed a rebuild and stuff, not worth it

1gge could be done (*wikipedia time checks some stats *)

edit: looked at that and yea rather a bit more than that maybe even 1jz(non-turbo) thatd be pretty cool but once again maybe too much fab work

    Hi,

Dare I say it... what about an 18R-G? It will bolt right in and won't destroy your insurance and give you a few horses under the hood.

what River said - 18RG is easiest

what V6? see gianttomatoe's thread about his adaptor plate http://www.toymods.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2096 and followup thread about adaptor rings for sale http://www.toymods.net/forums/showthread.php?t=3695.

    cheers,

camry motor is Very similar motor to the V6 4runner which has a 3vze 3litre v6.
3vze is allready the right orientation. Not huge power but very revy.
i would not bother with it as I have one in my 4X4 and If I had my way I would be changing it for a V8.
    cheers

if your budget is under $1200 then forget doing an engine conversion... nothing is going to better that price.

my budget isnt $1200 im just saying for $1200 i can get a decent more modern engine then the 18rg and use the rest on some of the fab work. the 3vz sounds like a decent idea with that adapter plate from gt cheers for the link thanks for all the help

You need to be happy with whatever engine you choose, so if you don't want an 18RG, don't do it

    but....

I don't know how much a 1G-GE costs, but i'd guess that a stock one in good running condition complete with loom and computer would not be cheaper than $700.

The cost of install will be engine, ecu, gearbox, new crossmember (i assume), driveshaft ( i assume), custom engine mounts, custom exhaust, engineering certificate, new brakes (probably) and it will still be regarded as a modified car by insurance companies. I also don't know if SA is the same, but my queensland rego would be more expensive for a 6-cyl than a 4. dollar figure? who knows!

18R-GEU's were actually produced later than the 70's, so they can be found not much older than the 1G's. I would guess a tired but complete late model 18R-GEU package could be found for the same price as a good 1G. But factor in the cost of a nice complete rebuild to make ur 18R-GEU near new, and you might be out of pocket by about $1000 more on the 18RG engine. The 18R-GEU also has all the niceties of the 1G including EFI, twin cam etc.

    The difference is:

    - your engine will bolt straight in without expensive and time consuming fabrication
    - the gearbox, crossmember and driveshaft will bolt straight up without expensive and time consuming fabrication
    - you will not need to upgrade the brakes which will save at least $500 in parts alone for the cheapest brake upgrade
    - you will not need an engineers certificate ($$$)
    - you car will still be standard in the eyes of most insurers
    - your insurance will be cheaper because of this
    - ur rego may be cheaper for a 4 cyl too.

Thinking to the future... when u do need another rebuild, it will be 6 pistons to replace instead of four. 24 (or is it 12?) valves/seats to replace and regrind for the 1G instead of 8 in the 18RG. Should you go custom exhuast manifolds.... 4 pipes will be cheaper than six. As will be four injectors to clean or replace compared to six.

Many a stock 18R-GEU has made more than 80RWKW on the dyno... just look at Witzls.

But hey... if an 18RG is not ur scene, go with the 1G-GE

    just regarding your concern over insurance;

    once your car becomes 30 years old, you can qualify for GIO vintage car insurance. They only take the agreed value of the car into consideration when working out your premium. Take me for example;
Current;$4200 agreed value stock TA22. Annual comprehensive insurance is $220.
Soon; $15000 agreed value TA22 engineered with 3tgteu, brakes/diff etc etc. $500 odd

    btw im 18.

So maybe, by the time you have completed say a 1ggte conversion, you would be eligible for cheap insurance.

    Just something worth considering
    Good luck

3vz is actually looking like a different and cool choice, and with the adaptor plate i can just bolt up to my existing gearbox etc and my uncle said he should be able to find one and help me fit it new engine mount and crossmember etc (hes engineer/steelworker who knows lot bout cars) the brakes im planning on upgrading no matter what engine i go, engineers certificate is no problem. but yeah timbo i know what ur saying bout the 18rg but it has never really tickled my fancy nor has the 1gge although i was having quick look into that. id just rather something that there are plenty of parts for and decently priced.
    cheers for the reply mate
