    Default TA23 vs. RA23

hey guys, im pretty new to the whole celica scene an was wonderin wot the difference is between the TA23 an RA23. I own a '76 TA23 (thought it was a '75, thus the name) and hav big plans 4 it. Main thing 2 get an overhaul is the engine. I want a 1JZ in the bay but dnt know if it wuld fit. I went bak an read the issue of Zoom with the Purple RA23 with the twin turbos, but the article said that only a RA23 can fit the Supra engine. Seeing as my car was made in the same year, wuld mine also b able 2 hold the 1JZ, or do i need 2 consider a smaller engine???? If any of u blokes culd giv me the pspecs of the 2 different models, itd b much appreciated

YOu need to be careful here.

    Is your car a TA22 or TA23 ???

Big difference. a *A23 has a longer engine bay than a TA22. You may have to convert some of the cross member parts out of a TA23 to RA23, but otherwise they are the same car just with a different motor.

BUT, it's important to be sure that youdont' have a TA22. Because if you have a TA22, you won't fit a 1jz without MAJOR firewalls motions...

Easiest way to tell is to check whether your car has a square or slanted nose.
A square nose will be a TA23 and a slanted nose will be a TA22 (apart from weird imported options)

Yep definately a TA23. The biggest hassle, is some states will not allow the 1JZ conversion into a TA23, as their weight is below the threshold for the engine size.

    Check with an engineer !!!!!

A guy in QLD had this problem, did up a nice TA23 shell, and then wanted to put in a 1J with all the big brakes and diff etc, The engineer had said no last time I heard.

The RA23 and TA23, differ mainly in engine 18R, and 2T. The Crossmember is different for theses engines. The other main problem, is the TA23 utilizes the smaller TA22 braking system, all the way from brake master to discs and rear slave cylinders.

So effectively you have a TA22 spec car, but it is wearing an RA23 body.

    cheers Chuck.

Well, just cos I'm nice and like to be sure...

Does the front light look like this one (the one at the top front, rather than on the guard next to the wheel)

Ok, well in that case, everything chuck said is correct.

That said, I've seen personally a RA28 which has the same engine bay size, with appropriate upgrades (brakes, diff, all of that) have a 1jz with std twin turbos fitted into it and engineered and it all worked well.

The only problem for you is the fact that you've got all the small bits of the TA22 in your '23. But you'll have to upgrade all of the shite anyway if your going to get a 1jz in there legally.

RA28 and TA23 will have the same engine bay.
Im pretty sure it wont be legal in SA.

Being that the RA28 is heavier than the TA23, would a 1JZ be a legal conversion in a RA28?

1JZ-GTE was legal in my RA23, so should be no problems in an RA28.

"Check with an engineer", as always before doing a conversion.

    cheers Chuck.
