Hi guys,
The engine and gearbox in my 89 Cressida is about to kick the bucket. I want to convert it to the 7MGTE. In terms of difficulty, does everything line up and fit correctly? How about putting the intercooler in, a lot to modify? The car has been booked in to convert to LPG (booked in months ago), how does this engine run on LPG?

I might as well say what another 30 people will say after me - do yourself a favour, and fit a JZ instead of the M.

Only reason I dont want to do this is because I don't want all the extra headaches associated with doing it.Originally Posted by mrshin
Either way I will go for the 7MGTE or keep it stock with the 7MGE
it is easyer to put a jzx81 1jz in then it is to put a 7mgte in
Care to explain to me please?Originally Posted by i2obert

Welcome.
That's why you searchOriginally Posted by PureHell
It's not that hard to find with some well chosen keywords.
There will be other threads which explain it in more detail (which is why we recommended the searchOriginally Posted by PureHell
). In a nutshell though, if you can get a JZX81 front cut, you can pretty much bolt the engine in as it's practically the same car. There is no such donor option for a 7MGTE conversion.

Go over to the cressida forums, and search. There is a stickied thread on one of the subcategories that details the ge to gte swap.
And apart from what has been said, a 7MGTE will result in a much bigger headache than a JZ motor would in the long run. Ever heard of BHG?
BHG is your friend I have only done 2!!!

Thanks for the replies guys. After considering what you guys said and doing my own research, I agree about the 1JZ being a lot easier to do.
So in my opinion this is the order of business
Get JZX81 half cut
Take 7M (attached to the crossmember), gearbox and all engine bay bits out of my car
Take glove box out and remove ecu and pull the wiring loom through the firewall and leave it in the engine bay
Take 1JZ (attached to the crossmember), gearbox, ecu, loom and all engine bay bits out of the donor car
Do timing belt etc on 1JZ
Put all engine bay bits into my car
Put 1JZ and gear box in
Connect everything up in the engine bay
Mount intercooler (2 extra holes required to be drilled?) and connect up
Put ecu in and feed wiring loom in
If using my dash instruments (speedo etc) repin the 1JZ loom from the 7M loom
If using the JZX81 dash then what is required to make it work? What is easier, using my dash or the JZX81 dash?
Drive the thing!
Now where I see myself getting stuck is with the wiringIf it's not a big job to wire up, I'm sure a carton or bottle of something will persuade someone
Now I have 2 questions about all this. What do I tell the insurance company? Will the 1JZ run on gas? I have the car booked in for a gas install and would like to use the gas for normal day to day driving and use petrol for the fun activitiesI have read someone else here has their car on LPG with this engine.
timing belt? most cuts that age will be passed 100,000k's and will have it done, then again, its always good to check.
what you need to do is pull the wiring loom out through the firewall.
you'll then see three plugs on the end, these plug into your ECU, you dont need these.
however, a little bit further up 10-15cm's you'll see another group of plugs.
now, these are the important plugs, they connect your engine to things like, your dash, ABS, etc. etc.
in order to have your dash working, and all the functions of the car working (so you can see whats going on) you need to connect these plugs onto the 1JZ loom.
once all the plugs are connected up, put the 1JZ in, pull the plugs back through the firewall, plug up all the plugs, then go back outside to the engine bay, and you have a little bit of work to do with the fusebox, connecting it so that the engine has power for spark, injectors, sensors, alternator etc.
there are plenty of wiring diagrams around, and it isnt hard if you have them, just a bit time consuming!

That's the bit I'm worried about! I know I should learn do it myself, but I would rather have someone do it with me than me taking a week trying to do it and end up screwing/messing it all upOriginally Posted by EldarO
it aint hard man, once you have the diagrams, you can see what colour wires have to join together.
really, its quite simple, theres no magic about it!
just make sure you have the right diagrams and the rest is a breeze (at least the wiring side of things ehehehe)
ive never liked wrestling engines into engine bays, but that still hasnt stopped me doing it repeatedly!
