AE82 racks seem to be the right length

Yeah if someone can confirm the AE82 rack length, that would be very good.( My AE82 has just been recovered by AAMI after being stolen and burnt out, BASTARDS)

If as we suspect, the AE82 rack is only 10 to 20mm longer, then that can easily be sorted. Shorten the rack by the required 10-20mm, and have each of the ball ends turned down 5-10mm, to maintain the same minimum turning circle.

    cheers Chuck.

The interesting one is that there is a rack end which has the inner ball end positioned about 10mm closer to the rack than the stock AE82 ones. Ill ahve to look it up in my notes though.

Thats true.. RA60 inner tie rods are like that. They have a longer threaded section also which helps if you are wanting to run longer control arms.

Thats right, it was RA60 rod ends. Which would probably compensate enough for the AE82 rack.

Seems there are length differences between power steer racks, and std racks. Mate of mine has been busy fitting RA60 front suspension to a TA22, only to find that the RA60 had a lower control arm replaced. One was shorter than the other, checked the other RA60 in his yard, and came to the conclusion PWR and STD are definately different.

PWR steer rack, would have a different turn ratio, (ie quick rack.) Std rack would have a bigger ratio, to ease the effort required to turn the wheel.

    cheers Chuck.

Does this mean my RA60 power steering rack for the 22 is a bad idea?

Jezz, talk to Steve, with regards to the specifics of RA60 bits. But I am pretty sure that the geometry would be FUBAR, using the RA60 rack in a TA22.

The rack from ball end to ball end, has to be shorter than the distance between the lower control arm bolt holes in the Xmember.

Has anyone measured or considered using racks from ford escorts or holden geminis? I have access to both of these and am endeavoring to get some measurements to see if they may be suitable.

The problem with the escort rack is that it bolts to the front of the crossmember. So if you mount it to the back of the crossmember you keep turning the wrong way

You could always swap the steering arms left to right and face them forwards to compensate for this... should be the same part mirrored. My brother used to drive Fords so I am used to sometimes thinking backwards

My bad, should have clarified still using original TA22 steering arms - wouldn't using these swapped left to right and facing forwards still have them pointing away from the discs and let you use a reverse rack such as a Ford one?

Uh, then you need to run it infront of the sump...
Pinto/Cossie engines are rear sump, not front sump. Would have to reverse EVERYTHING, and most of the smaller Toyota engines you cant get rear sumps for.
