    Default 1ggte single turbo conversions

    hey guys,

am in the process of converting my 1ggte to big single turbo.
turbo off an RB20 for the moment, and then a GT3071R once money permits.
just have one question, with the oil feeds in stock setup there are 2 feeds from the head. going to single should i plumb these 2 feeds into one, or should i plug one up and run just one feed?
i wasnt sure whether blocking one feed will create excess oil pressure in some areas, or if the single would flow enough. as a side reference, the banjo that came off the rb20 is the same as the one going into the 1g head, so im thinking they must be about the same
but im sure there are some guys out there that know more, so please dont hold out on me

    cheers, andrew

What I did with my turbo (which is a touch larger than yours...) is put a bolt in the second oil feed and just use the first one.

With respect to banjos, if the banjos fits, bolt it. So to speak.

    not that I"m aware of.

I'd imagine you could block both the return and teh feeds off all together and still not have any problems.

One thing I question, is an RB20 turbo even worth a custom turbo upgrade? I thought the purpose was to...upgrade?

and besides, i broke the twin turbos when i blew my oil pump.
and im not putting them back on, their just isnt room in the ke70 bay for them

Orlando - Actually the rb20 turbo is a fun little upgrade to the standard twins. Strangely enough it does produce a bee's dick more power and is equally as responsive as the twins.

I know this because I've seen one on a 1g before and been in the car.

Additionally, once you have the thing fitted, you can upgrade to another larger turbo when money permits because the surrounding ancillaries (oil lines and what not) are already suited to the single.

Out of curiosity and for stimulation of discussion, what manifold setup are you using for your single-turbo conversion on your 1G?

    Cheers,
    James

The RB20 turbo will give you a super responsive setup, dont expect to actually make anything over 12psi or be able to rev the thing out cleanly to the redline, the turbo just does not have the capacity to feed the 1g at revs. You will find that boost will drop down to 8 or 9psi up top. If your going to change it in future i wouldnt waste time with it. Though you will run a T3 base plate on the manifold so interchangability to a GT30 at a later date will be not so costly. Now secondly I ran a gt30 on my 1g for a period of time, was a laggy POS unsuited for street driving, in the end i ditched that setup, went for a GT2871r with a 56trim and 0.86 rear housing capable of flowing 440hp. This setup was responsive, producing 15psi at 3200rpm and allowing the car to pull cleanly to redline and holding boost all the way.

    Hope this helps

strad, thankyou. i couldnt be bothered going into all that
at the end of the day the engine is in a ke70, not like im short of power already
    Merudo, a 6boost manifold

fattony, thankyou for the info, i was wondering if i was maybe going i little too big
with the rb20 turbo i am not bothering to change anything on it, just gonna run stock rb20 boost, 8 or 9 pound apparently, and that will keep me happy for a while
im about to become an apprentice, so its not like im gonna ahve the money to upgrade to the garrett turbo for a little while yet
and yes, the T3 base plate, and having all the lines etc all ready makes it an almost bolt on upgrade in the future

thanks to all, and dont let me stop you chatting about all these things which i am still delving into

turbo size is all dependent on what you are using the car for, for future reference if you do decide to upgrade from a rb20 turbo to a gt28, the gt28 uses a t2 baseplate.

oh, well thats handy isnt it...
    did you use a GT30R or GT3071R?
because apparently the GT30R is a lag monster, and the GT3071R will spool 1000 rpm sooner...

    6boost make a manifold for the 1GGTE?

I'd had a look on the horsepowerinabox website, they had it mentioned in brief passing however they did not list pricing for said manifold.

Would you mind letting me know where you bought this from? Just speculating on costs vs. getting a steampipe y-pipe manifold made up off the stock one, and this thread perked my interest in a full replacement manifold for the 1G.

Yes, 6boost make a manifold for a 1G. This is because each and every manifold is custom made to order. I am a 6boost dealer, but you can also approach him direct if you will.
