Yes, you need to press the bearings off. You will also have to remove the bearing collar. Best bet to get the collar off, is use an angle gringer with a 1mm thick cutting disc. Cut at a 45 deg angle to about 3/4 depth, the apply genereous clout to a cold chisel in the slot you just made. Cuation, do not cut through to the axle, once scored, it is FUBAR big time.

Press old bearing off, do not try to polish the axle, just press new bearing on. Use Mum's sandwich maker, wrap your bearing collars in some oven proof paper (just to keep the sandwich maker free of oil) heat the collars for 20 minutes, then drop them on the axle. Welders gloves prevent burnt fingers !!!

    cheers Chuck.

cheers mate, last night i pulled the axles out in preperation to do this but looks like it was a bent axle rather than a noisey wheel bearing!

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to ChuckLandwehr again.

Love the sandwich maker suggestion. Maybe should make a sanger, toast it and eat it while the collars are heating up?

Thanks for the kind words guys. I actually made up my own press for popping the bearing off. Stole the bottle jack from my sons ute, mounted it in a frame, right way up, The top has a removable bracket, so it is sorta suspended from the top of the frame. Wind it down till it contacts the axle, then start pumping.
Geez I am glad I did that welding course at TAFE, so many things to stick together these days.
YelloRolla, love your pre heat method, very tasty.

    cheers Chuck.
