i think you will find that you will need to carefully pull of the nobs of the heater and fan switches and then remove the display panel from the facia.
You may also find that the air vents are connected at the back and you will probably find more screws there to remove.
Also, when your pulling it out, you may need to sneak your hand up the back of the facia and disconnect things like your cigarette lighter and rear window heated wired defog.
Hope that helps
thanks guys for that... didnt think of the knobs
The facia came out out 3/4 so i didnt bother undoing the rest of the heating stuff in the back of it (partly because i dont really trust myself lol)
Sadly the problem still remains with the new gauge... When the car is running or the ignition turned on the fuel gauge goes up a few notches, stays there for a couple of seconds and then falls back down to zero. Any idea of whats wrong? btw i've put in a new sender unit which didn't do anything either.... I don't wanna part with $250 to take it to an auto electrician!

3 parts to the circuit, sender, guage, and in between, the wires. Gota be in the wiring, if you have new sender and guage. Check power supply to sender, and to guage, and check earth's.

Do the rest of your gauges work OK?, sounds like a power suply problem.

All the other gauges worked perfectly it's just the fuel gauge..... would they all be running to the same earth?

Same power supply for all guages. Earth for sender is the only difference. You have not been painting near your fuel tank have you?
Wiring diagrams are your friend.
cheers Chuck.

nope havn't been painting near the tank at all.... What do you mean by earth from the sender unit because all that they both consisted of was actual unit with the 6 or so screws and the connection at the top of it..... i might just go check that wire now.

The fuel guage sender unit earth's through the 6 screws to the tank. Ensure tank is securely mounted to the car, clean the connector on the sender unit, and physically check the continuity between the sender unit, and the guage. Multimeter's are as cheap as $12.00 -$15.00at the moment, not designed for full time sparky, but will last a youngfella quite a few years.
cheers Chuck.

Get someone to watch the gauge for you and earth the wire that hooks to the sender directly to earth, gauge should go full travel, don't hold for too long.
Check for continuity from sender body through to car body.
