Cool Retrofit Electric Mirrors on a 70's car?

    Hi,

Has anyone fitted electric mirrors to a 70's car that didn't have them originally? Eg Corolla, Corona, Celica?

Are good-looking electric mirrors available aftermarket, or can anyone recommend a donor car?

eBay has lots of electric mirrors, but they all fit in the corner of the bottom front windows, rather than on the door skin.

It seems I'm going to have to remove the fender mirrors from my JDM Corona Coupe for the engineers cert, I'd like to fit electric ones on the doors.

    Cheers for any tips,

Are you sure you have to remove the fender mirrors?I have had fender mirrors on my cars for years, never had a problem. What is the difference of a pedestrian hitting a mirrror on the fender to hitting a pedestrian with your door mirror when you swerve to miss them. How about bull bars? External fog lights,CB aerials? Just double check.I know you always wanted something different, your car will blend into normal boring society with door mirrors, leave the fender mirrors and people will notice the rare unique car you have.Police have passed my cars and smiled with a big thumbs up.I had a policeman pull up beside my KE25 and say " That is the best looking corolla I have ever seen!" Your car is a Japanese import, keep it looking that way,if not just give the fender mirrors to me

i think the same mirrors can be found on the popup headlight RWD 929, might make it cheaper at the wreckers:

"yeah they are from a clapped out 929"

the same as everything i buy is from a clapped out 80's corona, you know that shit ugly one, yeah thats the one.... 20 bucks? no worries mate

Thanks for the thoughts and tips.

I'd like to keep the fender mirrors, but from what the engineer has said, they are probably not legal. Something in the ADR's about mirror positioning and field of view. So I'm exploring my options.

Hey mate, just had to remove my fender mirrors due to yellow sticker, as they were not apparently legal, and obstructed vision or something. So to answer your question for sure, pits dont allow them

What a bunch of wankers...I see that many people on the road with enough stuffed animals and dangly things hanging off the interior of their car to render vision impossible, yet I see the same buggers parked next to the cops at the lights with no fuss whatsoever..

AS people have said before with the old celicas, keep a scanned brochure of your car out of a Jap catalogue or somthing and be polite and courteous to mr policeman, hopefully you dont get too many hassles.

    Hi,

Even though it's not out on the road very often, I've driven past a few cops in my car and have been beside them at the lights. Sometimes they ignore me and a few times they nod and give me the "thumbs up" (see, even the fuzz appreciates some good old classic cars), but they've never pulled me over to question the fender mirrors.

Also it passes rego without a problem.

    Yes, It's frustrating.

Even if the engineer (a trained and qualified professional) passes them, if Mr Plod (untrained) decides he doesn't like them, then he can slap on a canary.

Oh well, I will know more when I present the coupe to the engineer I guess.

The ship carrying it docks tomorrow.

    From the VicRoads website:

    ADR 14: Rear Vision Mirrors
Defines requiremenst for the type, location, field of view, reflective capabilities and mounting details of rear vision mirrors. The internal and right-hand side mirrors required under this ADR must be flat*.

Applies to Passnger vehicles built after 1/72. My Corona is a 75.

If I could find the whole legislation (rather than a summary) I may be able to work out a way around it.

    * I think convex RH mirrors may now be legal, as I recently drove a new Pug with one. It annoyed the crap outta me.

The way I see it a factory mounted mirror would be more legal than an aftermarket one.Fender mirrors keep you looking straight ahead, well adjusted ones work a treat.

Agreed! I may canvas a few engineers, see if I get some differing opinions.
