    Default 22RE head porting?

Hey guys. I've got an RA65 which I've already sourced a cam for the 22re but was wondering if anyone knew somewhere I could get the head ported in brisbane (I live at mount gravatt) that knows what they are doing. Also I have read that you can't just port it out like some other heads, that they actually have to be shaped?

Any info regarding this will be much appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi,
Any good cylinder head shop will be able to do your 22r mate.
A basic dag removal and bowl rework is all that is usually done. Unless you are talking big dollar race applications, then reshaping and flowing the entire port is a bit of overkill.

the ports 'swirl' in the 22re heads. What type of profile is your new cam?

Well I plan on turbo'ing it earlyish next year so I don't want to get it ported twice... I also don't want to, as you said, go overkill on it.

    Thanks

as for the cam I was thinking of either 32640 or 32721 from http://www.crowcams.com.au/templates...yota-OHC.shtml

most likely 32640? Don't want to lose too much low down for top end.

How serious is the turbo-ing? If you are just doing a street turbo setup I probably wouldn't bother with porting. Stock cam is fine for the application too

Whoa.....just to throw this out there.....are you sure you want to stick with the 22re?

You could pick up a motor designed for turbo (1ggte for example) much easier and cheaper I suggest! Are you sure you don't want to go the factory turbo / engine swap way?

    Cheers

Definately going to turbo the 22RE. keep things a bit interesting

Nothing too serious obviously. Around 6-8psi. With suspension 22re's can drift in the dry no worries. I just want to coax a bit more out of it. My brother's a mechanic who recently just finished turbo'ing his EB XR6 with no drama's and I've got heaps of people who can help/provide info etc.

The 22re in my celica is in really good nick and just got a new head put on about 3 years ago so I'm pretty confident (with proper internals) that it'll produce some pretty good power (nothing dyno breaking but )

    Thanks guys!

hey dude, we got a 22R sitting at home, with a EFI manifold, and turbo, had originally planned to whack it in my '28, but it needs to be re-assembled,

just wondering if anyone knows of a front timing cover for it?

i'm interested to see what the 22R can do... americans love their 22R's, getting some massive horse power from them, impressive considering, they're SOHC...

    Seriously... its not worth it.
They only work the 22R in the USA because they didnt get the 18R-G.

The $$s they have put into 22Rs to get big HP would be much better spent on another engine.

but the 18rg has no balls, the 22re has fucken heaps of torque!!! uid suggest a cam to give you a few more rpm, maybe look at a different style intake, one not so torque specific - ie shorten the runners, but have a large plenum and throttle body still to give you your low down go. Dont be too concerned by whats said here, the general consensus is if its not a 1ggte, 1jzgte or a 18rg its not worth having.

Keep doing what your doing, keep us posted on your progress.

Yeah I'm going to go against the grain and stick with the 22RE. They have heaps of potential. Definately not going for like 1k+ HP at the wheels just after a higher power band (i.e. past 4k rpm haha) but as I said I don't want to lose too much bottom end as it'll be a truck motor powered drift bitch.

I am in support of using the 22R engine. In an ideal world the Hilux would get a Bugatti Veyron engine

I did my own head porting on the 22R head, (still need to finish it off ). The standard castings are pretty rough so there is a reasonable amount to gain on just cleaning up the ports. I attacked it with a deburring bit in the die grinder to start with. Currently trying to figure out the best way to put the surface finish on the ports as it is kinda tricky with the swirl ports!

persoinally, i wouldn't bother porting the head (other than to clean it up, get the valves looked at and get the manifold/port faces matching...

your big improvements are going to come from:
-a proper turbo manifold not an ugly log thing (seeing as you're intent on heading down this path
-a proper cam to suit a turbo engine (less overlap, longer zorst duration, etc) talk to Ivan Tighe cams (or get your engine builder to do that for you if you are using one)
-injectors that flow enough fuel on boost (fwiw, i'm using 4agze 365cc/min units on my 18rte)
-proper engine management (the 22re ecu is not up to the job)

I'd suggest you see what RAd28 has on offer...
