    Default TA22 Suspention

I tried doing a search and couldn't find what I'm looking for so here goes...

I recently got some new mags with quite a large offset. The rubber stuck outside of the guards, so I had them flared to make it legal. The problem now is that when I hit a bump the wheel rubs on the guard.
The question I have is this: Are there any springs for the rear of a TA22 that are just stiffer? I don't really want to raise or lower it, just make it a bit tougher.
I realise that my shocks are probibly stuffed and will need to get new ones. Are there any particular brands to stay away from?

I'm going to get the work done by a workshop (tools and workspace are the problem), so the more I know the less I can get ripped off (i hope)

    Thanks

You can get custom King springs made if you like, they can be ordered from Autobarn, and arent that much more than a normal set. You can easily change over rear springs yourself, all you need is a jack, a pair of axle stands and a 14mm spanner/socket.

Raise rear end via diff, put axle stands under the subframe in front of rear wheel well, undo the 14mm bolts on the bottom of the shocks and remove lower part of shock from diff housing, lower diff until springs are loose (removing wheels will help), remove old springs, install new springs, then raise the diff till the shocks will go on, put them on, do up the bolts, raise till off the axle stands, remove axle stands, install wheels, lower car, drive away.

Shouldnt take more than half an hour if you have a hydraulic trolley jack (cheap from Kmart). In fact it would be cheaper to buy the gear yourself, and the tools, and do it yourself. Can be done on the side of the road if required.

Shocks will be a bit trickier, get somebody to hold the upper sleeve (under the car) while you undo the top nut (beside fuel tank, inside boot). Quite easy to do while you are swapping the springs. Should require 17mm spanner.

What size wheels and tyres are you running. You could always run a different width tyre or wheel.

Slightly off topic but something to remember, you can use LC/LJ Torana rear shocks in the rear of the celica which are slightly shorter and work well with lowered suspension as you dont need to worry bout the shocker running out of travel.

so, are you saying the LC/LJ torrie shocks will bolt up with no mods to a TA22?

He's saying that they will take up the slack when you put in lowered springs in the rear.
    That's probably a bad explanation.

If you lower the rear, your standard shocks will be working at a position they weren't designed to work at. They are effectively too long for your lowered suspension. The LC/LJ are shorter to match the springs.
    I'll be using these, methinks.

I'm assuming they would bolt up, no mods. Nut at the top, eye at the bottom that slips over the rod on the diff. Easy peasy.

Why not buy some good shocks as opposed to buying standard ones for a different car?

If your shocks are stuffed then get new shocks. Even cheap ass pedders or monroes will make a difference to how much the suspension travels up and down. If you want a better shock go KYB, Koni, or Bilstein.

Stiffer springs will do the same, but if your shocks are fucked you are going to have to replace them anyway. Remember if your springs are old and stuffed too, they are probably sagging a bit as well, so standard new springs may raise the car. For this reason I would do the shocks first.

search the forums, there are some compatible cars to the TA22 with regard to the rear shocks. The rear shocks will have the same listing as RA23 and probably RA28.

Ring quadrant suspension direct, they are helpful and will go through the books and see what shocks will fit, even if they are made for another car. They did for me and I ended up with mr2 shocks in the front of my ke55! Hope this helps

Toperformance in Melbourne will be able to do a Koni for you as well in mush the same way as Quadrant.

Surprising. I am convinced that they can still make you one up from something else. Sure they don't list one under "Celica" but they can do something custom I would have thought.
