Default Identifying Toyota Air Temp Sensor

Have another silly question. Race car is fitted with a Toyota air temp sensor in the intake plenum/resonator, just before the throttle body. It has been on the car since 1985, so is a mid 80's thing, however the 5ME and 5MGE don't seem to have a similar separate sensor in the AFM, and neither of my parts Supras have one like this. Haynes manual shows that the 7MGE AFM has a separate air temp sensor but doesn't show what it looks like. Local Toyota dealer could not identify it. Marked '12C' and '26' as well as the Toyota and Nippondenso symbols. Anyone recognise it?

    Thanks, John

that looks like a water temp sensor to me

the 7mge air temp sensor in the airbox looks like a small black plastic bullet. nothing like that image above

No, its definately air temp only, sensor housing which projects into the airstream is plastic, doubt it would withstand 110 degrees and 15psi of fast water flow.

Yep the 4age bigport had one that screwed into the inlet manifold. Did you need one as i have one.

Thanks for that, no wonder I couldn't find it. Makes sense too as the injection system and computer was made in England by the same guys who did Win Percy's 1982 BTCC Corolla amongst other things. Basically I am changing computers from the original GEMS one to a Motec M48, GEMS have refused to continue to support the 23 year old injection computer, no idea why.... Was not going to go to the trouble of getting MOTEC to come up with a table for the sensor if I could not buy spares, but I would have had to modify the intake plenum to fit the MOTEC sensor which is much shorter and has a very different thread. So yes, would love to grab a spare one.

    Thanks guys,

    John

fwiw: the GM air-temp sensors (found in the rear of the V6 intake manifold) are a cheap handy air temp sensor - just the sort of thing motec would have have a temperature table for as they're common sensors and GM tends to have the same specs for sensors regardless of packaging.

I'm only guessing - but the thread looks about the same - the GM items also have a nice connector for the sensor - very waterproof and not prone to cracking.

The GM one is also an open cage sensor so it rapidly responds to changes in air temps.

Yes the AC-Delco sensor is cheap enough ($40 or so) and it is the one MOTEC recommend, but it is a different thread and is much shorter. The race car has a special fabricated inlet plenum over the engine, and it has been built to suit this sensor, the Delco one doesn't even protude into the airstream in it. Otherwise I would have just swapped sensors, much easier. May still do it anyway if the Toyota ones turn out to be completely different, I just didn't want to muck around with the unique parts of the car too much.
