what happened to setting the cams to 270 degrees?
i would suggest a site search and a google search. after you have performed said searches, i would ask:
what car is it?
how much power do you want?
how much of the work can you do yourself?
How we doing fellas...need some advice. I plan on turboing my 20valve (silvertop), brought the microtech LT8s ready to go...i need to know how much am i looking to spend to get it done properly with no dramas....i dont want extreme power just enough to get some pull and use it for an everyday drive....
i was thinking around the $5,000 with my own computer (LT8s microtech) in hand.
anyone know wether it is a good idea, will i get headaches?!
Your opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

if you plan on running about 7 or 8psi then you'd probably manage to scrape by with $5K using a TD04 turbo and putting it together or with a mate.
Any more boost on stock internals of a 20V will see it last 6months![]()
I have been pruned by old man river!!!!!
start adding up the parts you need and find as many prices as you can for each.
Turbo manifold (custom made? second hand from someone elses project)
Intercooler (needs to be good if you want boost on 10.5 compression)
Intercooler piping / welding
exhaust welding
dyno tuning
etc etc
intake plenum / airbox: the stock ones tend to blow apart with boost apparently, at around 10psi.
I reckon 5k would do it easily enough, since you've already got the ECU

rebuild it with the 8.9:1 4agze pistons
then you have a new motor that can handle 20 psi
you bought an ecu without even researching a budget....
adam dont forget the $1500 of parts that are in need of repair while your pulling things to bits and the $1000 of little bits and pieces that everyone seems to forget about
pod filter there goes 90 bucks
turbo lines theres another 100 - 300
bigger brakes
possibly better suspension
modification plate
etc etc
ohh and the bits that break due to the increased stress on every moving part...
Only the shittiest of wines come in 5 litres
boosted 3rz hilux *new project* mwahaha

I saw the question as asking about a minimalistic low-boost bolt on turbo setup simply to "get some pull" (as suss as that sounds) - in other words, barely any power increase, just the novelty of having turbo lol
But the serious rebuild option and spending as much as possible on everything possible, is always a better idea![]()
On a side note out of curiosity, are the pistons in 4ages the main thing determining the compression ratio? eg, to rebuild a silvertop with 8.9:1 pistons, the compression ratio will not necessarily be 8.9:1? then what about the same pistons in a blacktop? (11:1 to start with)

Although on the other hand, you could say that having a turbo with minimal boost is a better way to get into the turbo world and gaining experience instead of going all out on a quick car with no experience.. my 2cents anywayOriginally Posted by adamaw11

could i assume that youd get in the range of 12-16% increase?
i havent cc'd the 2 20v heads yet, but i will when they get back from flow testing.
flatty is building a NA beast and im building a boost engine. so we are working out which is the best for each application

This is a 20valve set up maybe worth checking out for some tips and ideas that might give ya some help

I was really just exagerrating when I said - barely any power increase. You tend to get a bit of critisizing from people when talking of high-comp low boost turbo setups.
