Default Wanted Advice About Rust On Gearbox Cogs

I am a newbie when it comes to old stuff and need to know from the TOYEXPERTS about the ramifications of buying an old dismantled gearbox that has surface rust on input and output shafts but moreso on some of the gear/cogs? SOme say a light linnish will fix it but in a GT gearbox under load what happens if you sand/linnish surfce rust from a case hardened gear? gearbox is 30 years old and has been apart for years. Need bearings as well. .

personally, from the cogs i'd remove the rust by hand with s/steel wool (i.e. pot scubber) and scotch-brite pads lubricated well with light oil, and from the smooth shafts using strips of fine wet/dry paper plus oil as lubricant.

Before you start any sanding/scrubbing - soak the parts in a parts cleaning bath or a liberal spraying of oil-based degreaser (e.g. several tins of supacrap degreaser) and allow to drip dry.

You'd have to dig deep (e.g. grind) to get thru the case-hardened layer.
