I have a feeling I'm missing something with all this, like I said it was over a year ago I installed these!

I believe this is what theChuckster is meaning....

What happens is when the switch is closed, the light is earthed and we have light.

When the switch is left open, the light then receives it's earth through the jaycar kit, which leaves this earth open for a certain amount of time. When that is finished the kit then simply switches off and the light has no earth at all, therefore it is off.

Still begs the question as to what the hell is wrong with mine lol!

Sorry, I'm more with it now. I had a feeling that the jaycar kit had it's own earth? If so then it all makes sense to me, I was mixed up in thinking that it didn't.

Does the led light? If not your mosfet could be the wrong way around.
I do not believe there is an LED in the system... I have tried a new mosfet in the opposite orientation. I have also tried a new optocoupler in a different orientation... made the FET heat up like all hell. I actually installed a socket for this so I can pop in a new optocoupler in without having to solder it over again.

When the jaycar kit is pluged in and the switch is turned off, I'm getting basically 0 voltage reading over it's + and - terminals.. this right?

I'm going to try to plug it into my ST162 or my sisters ST184 tonight and see if that works, but I can't see how plugging it into an actual car rather than a simple 12V circuit with a light and switch will make it differ.

The only thing I haven't replaced is the bridge rectifier, however I don't think this would affect what I'm doing at all... I don't currently have the tail light circuit hooked up, I did not think this would make a difference as per the circuit diagram, it seems like a completely seperate circuit. I have however put voltage through the tail light circuit to see if it cut out the lamps at all, but no result.

Just seems overly complicated for what should be a relatively simple design.

If the Jaycar unit senses the Tail light circuit and chooses not to work when it is on (per the Chuckmeister), may that not be the problem you are having with not installing it in a real car?

I guess I am trying to say that a lack of a tail light circuit may not be the same thing as sensing that the tail light circuit is not operating. If so, then your kit is working because it just hard shuts the light off.

    Um, just a thought.

door switches earth the switch housing to the body and have a single +ve wire out the bum.

opening the door completes the circuit hence turning on the light.

with this in mind my idea is this

hook jaycar positive to door switch positive (all door switches should be daisy chained)
    hook earth to body somewhere.

im assuming the kit fakes the door open signal to trip the light and doesnt need to be connected to the actual wires leading to the light.

Edit: just re-read the thread and found ive said nothng new

I will try that, however I'm not even using a door switch to test it, i'm using a normal old switch... perhaps that has been my issue all along... i don't know... like I said I'll try and install it in my ST162 soon and see if that brings along any progress... I thought that the tail light circuit might not need to be connected seeing as from the circuit diagram, that section looked seperate... however I will try it out anyway and see what happens. Thanks for all your ideas guys I'll have to dose out some pos rep.

Well I hooked it up to the ST162... didn't even need to hook up the brake light circuit and it works fine... obviously there was some variable there in my fake circuit that I didn't take into account... of course this means I'll need to find some door switches and work out the wiring in the RA23 earlier than I anticipated, but at least I know my circuit it correct. Thanks for the inputs guys, + rep for all!

As yes sorry i missinterpreted the diode. Good to hear it is all fixed. One thing to note though is that i installed one of these onto my mates 180. It used to stuff up the alarm so we removed it. whenever the alarm was activated it would turn on the delay kit, which would simulate the door open and the alarm would complain. Maybe that is what they fixed in the new revison...

actually - door-light switches are in parallel - daisy-chain infers some kind of serial connection.
