I believe the A340 is similar to some Jeep transmissions?
Either way after overheating a Jeep tranmission when heavy 4WDing, a mate fitted a gauge and better cooler and was seeing about 86 degrees C and the car ran a lot better with no overheating of the trans.

So I'd say anywhere from 83-87 would be the where you want it.

I do know the GM turbo700 auto shuts off at 130'c, so you might even be able to go a little higher than 87" - i cant see why different manufacturers boxes would vary dramatically.

I guess its like any oil, there is a temperature range it works best at. It may not break at say 110deg C, but is it good for long term running? Probably not.

As long as its up to standard operating temperature, I can't see why running it hotter would be better?

I know after 120c the oil starts to break down....i was curious of what the normal operating temp is at... I guess a 90degree thermo swich should do the job....Thanks for your responses....
