Default The most notorious problem, Gearbox crunching

Okay lets face it, it is the most annoying, yet potentially a critical financial factor if problems persist...

My mate has a really bad problem with his 3rd gear, im sure its the synchro, he shoves it in at low or high revs makes a nasty crush and takes a crucially longer time to place into gear.....

he then faces the following options:
    - A expensive rebuild/recondition of the gearbox....
    - Believes a mate, and takes the option of buying Redlin Superlight shockproof for $150 a US gallon.

Now my question is, does the redline oil really stop crunching, or is this a false perception...?

please do not comment if you havent had any crunching experience...

    Hi,

Good question.... what box is in there? May be cheaper to get a 2nd hand box if it's nothing too fancy or rare.

Redline, from what I've been told and read, is a superb oil.... however, if something is on the way out within the gearbox no oil in the world is going to stop it. It may delay it a little, it may cover up the problem for a short while or it may minimise the crunching - but when mechanical bits are worn and close to failure there's no oil (no matter how good) that's going to give it a miraculous recovery.

See the man who's almost to 1000rep above. If something's failing, all you can do with a good oil is slow it down and maybe reduce the severity. My AW11 box had totally shagged 2nd gear synchros, I rebuilt the thing myself (NOT something I recommend), and it's beautiful now. But I don't think the 20v boxes are too pricey, just get a 2nd hand one, and grab an LSD box while you're there

it'd be a c56. Whether it's the 6speed LSD or 5 speed is another question

They're not expensive imo, $400-600 will get a good condition box non-LSD of course

    its either a ae101 c56 if its 5 speed or a ae111 c160 if its a 6 speed.

i thought there were 2 different versions of the c56. Usually if the last part number is an even number it's an LSD box if odd then it's your run of the mill 5 speed

You can always try running some cheap dextron III to see if it alleviates the issue short term.
