    Default 2jzge Vvt I

Has anybody installed an after market computer on a 2J VVT I motor. I have installed a Microtech on a 2JZGE VVT I and am trying to get my head around how the VVT i works.
I have had it on the Dyno and it does not make any power. I have read that the factory computer send pulses to the VVT solenoid but my dyno man and I are wondering if the cam sits in a central position while low rev running and then advances and retards as necessary. The reason I ponder this thought is that after assembly of my repaired head I noticed that the inlet cam variation is somewhere about 20 degrees advance from the sitting position, which is massive. We have operated the VVT solenoid at 2000rpm, 4000rpm and 6500rpm and watched the horsepower drop dramatically each time.

    Any thoughts?

all i can say is good luck

if it has vvti the microtech will not control it

this has been covered millions of times on here

maybe u should have done more research before progressing to aftermarket ecu

microtec will not control the vvti
it might be able to functiona basic vvt ie step function though

    example of vvti function here:

I don't really want the VVT working anyway, I purchased the engine presuming that it would have more low down HP and Torque. It's gone into a Hiace SBV and it never goes over 4000rpm anyway (it's my work truckand weighs 2400kg's). I am just trying to find out if the cam floats around at low rpm and then that will tell me to sack the vvt and run a standard cam, cause at the moment it down about 30hp.

the reason the have better tourque is the vvti. it should fully retard the int cam at low rpm to decrease overlap. it shouldnt 'float'

you realise you can just swap the cams in and out?
    the head will need swapping

contavct gianttomato - he might have a non vvti head hed swap with you

all the vvti does on start up is, turned off for idle but put your foot down and cam will advance 26 cam degrees ,take foot off will retard back to off posi it works with tps ,cam timing with cam sensor posi and also like the motec will have a cam table built in to the ecu it will have cam degress from 0 to 26 fully advance so for idle is 0 degrees 2000 rpm could be up to 12 degrees 4000 up to 24 degrees and up from that 26 as it is getting up to say 6000 rpm the cam might retard back 3 to 4 degrees for the power to keep going up

Thanks, I have a 2jzge non vvt engine as well as sets of cams so I will have a look. The biggest drama is the cam clearances, what a pain they are to adjust.

Is there any noticable difference between the 2jzge vvt i and the non vvt 2jz as the listed power figures are nearly identical. Is it really worth the hassle when it comes down to just driving it?

Low down torque is improved as well as better fuel economy.

I think I will take a set of cams to a grinder and get him to grind up a set that will give better low down power, who wants to here a Hiace spinning it's engine to 6500rpm anyway.

Who wants a Hiace with upwards of 200kW for that matter?

If you just want a low-rpm grunter get yourself a Commodore V6, they're cheap and someone probably makes conversion kits for the Hiace. Don't waste a sweet engine like the VVTi 2JZ on a big heavy van, especially if it doesn't suit your purposes to begin with.

    Too late its in.
I do a heap of out of town jobs and don't like having to send a text message to the B Double in front if he would mind letting me know when there is a 2k clear road ahead so I can pass.
This is my second converted Hiace, the 1st has a 7mge in it and it is great. Its now done 290,000ks and I have upgraded, so I thought I would upgade to the later Supra motor. I wouldn't use a holden has I have always been happy with Toyota reliability.
