    Default W57 vs W58

After winning the street rwd class at jambo, with sunday me running a blown gearbox all day. I'm in need of a new one.

Current box whines and grinds in 4th and 5th gear. So it is proberbly beyond saving.

Bsaiclly, i have come across 2 gearboxes. One is a W58 from a NA JZA80, and the other is an unknown box, fully rebuilt by mechanic a few years back. So his forgotten what exactly it is.

The W58 from the supra has 170k's on it, apparently shifts alright, but has a little bit of whine, as far as i know when it comes to the W58, sounds about normal.

The 2nd gearbox i believe is a W57, as spinning the input shaft 10 times, sees it goen around about 11.75 times in the output shaft in 5th gear. Which works out to close to 0.85 : 1.

An R154 is out of the question, as i would need a custom bellhousing to suit my hilux. And no auto's.

So the question i should be asking is, should i go with th W58 or the W57? Im erring toward the W57, and swapping out the 5th gear in my current box to go into it. (i have to swap the extension housings....)

heres a great link if you havent already got it:
    http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/P...Gearboxes.html

according to that, the ratios are the same for the first 4 gears with 5th being taller on the W58, which is what id personally prefer as its good for highway speeds, you wouldnt use 5th in racing anyway.
but then again there may be other differences not outlined on that page.

well thats why im asking if i can swap over my 5th gear from my current box. Since i believe it is still in good order. And its on the end of the extension housing.

so you have a W58 and want to run your taller 5th gear in the W57? didnt you say your problem was with 4th and 5th already?

i believe its just the bearings along the input shaft. But won't know until i rip out the box.

You can't just swap 5ht gear.

You would have to swap the layshaft, and 5th gear, which requires more than just taking the rear extension housing off.

Have a look at the TSRM for the MkII supra (or NA MkIII supra) to see the internals of the W5X boxes

Hrrrm, ok swapping gears looks a bit harder then i thought. But it just looks like you have to remove most of the stuff to get to it.

It is true that the W58 from the NA JZA80 is the one to get yeah?

    Yes it does

Many people say that the NA JZA80 W58 is better as it has some wider bearings, gears, steel plate etc...

I have my own personal belief that all steel plate W5x have the wider bearings, gears, etc. If you look at the toyota EPC there was a change to steel plate in 89 I believe.

The JZA80 one is going to be one of the newest W58's around so I'd suggest it would be a good way to go...
