i would check terminal pin connections on guages and matching clips, light bulbs and contacts, earth/ground wire, see if you can wriggle the wires in the back to try and make the fault come up.

hey guys, this is really trippy and i dont know what too do,
my interior lights on my 23 are playing up, lights to the tacho, speedo, clock work but lights to my water, fuel, oil, charge arent working,
i had nathan ( TA022 ) check it out ( hopefully he can get on and elaberate on what he done )
and they were working once i left his house, drove to my house a good 30mins away and i switched them on they worked turned the car off and the lights, came to go out later that night and they refused to work![]()
same thing last night on the drive down to my cousins house along the M5 everything was sweet, switched car off sat for a while then came to go home and they refused to work,
trippy part is this i changed every single fuse on saturday, we took out dash on saturday and everything had power,
is there something i am missing??

I second what Fonzy said,
also was it raining?...the fuse box is convieniently placed in the early celica's under the corner of the windscreen, so if your screen leaks it leaks down onto the fuses.
It might be a good idea to clean the fuse contacts for the lights and also the assocciated earth contacts.

Benny
Fonzy where you been champ??
long time we have to catch up some time,
nathan checked that i have power behind the guagues and my screen doesnt leak
thanks for the thoughts guys

1980RIP NATHAN BRETT DEAN2007,
hey ive had this problem with my speedo and hazzard light switch, found out that the contacts on the back of the guage and matching clips that the spade terminals on the clips were corroded (rough green colored). I got some sand paper and with the help of a flat head screwdriver (for hard to reach places), sanded them down, then had a can of contact cleaner (electical residue cleaner) and gave it a spray.
could be a cut wire, and or not getting a proper earth causing intermittent faults. i doubt its the fuse cause if it was, wouldnt all your lights not work at the same time?
ill see you and your 23 at toyfest for sure, we can catch up then. the 22 will be there too

basically checked:
globes / connector / pins / fuses. multimetered multiple conections for power
as well as continuity / resistance. All good.
What it comes down to Ibz is 30 year old wiring. Ill sort ya anytime you have 30-60mins.
Holla!

Had the same problem in a Mini once. It was a crack in the printed circuit board behind the gauges. It only seemed to happen after I had been driving a while, as the heat of having the dash lights on was causing the components to expand very slighty - enough to open the crack and stop electricity flowing.![]()

What kind of connectors connect to the dash?? Can you get new ones and rewire the plugs?
If not try (depending on type of plugs) squash the connector slightly so its a bit harder to plug in. That worked on my ke30.![]()
Hi,
The wiring for the gauge lights is daisy-chained from gauge to gauge. So the problem would be between the gauge that light does work and the next gauge whose light doesn't work. I think the clock has separate wiring... well it does on the TA22.. not sure about the TA23. That is, the wire for the light in the clock isn't daisy-chained from the other gauges.
I'd be checking the connector on the two gauges (ie working/non-working gauges). Could be a cracked board - assuming the connection goes into the gauge circuit board and out again. Or, just a bad connector/wiring on one of the gauges.
Turn the lights on and thump the dash and see if they go on/off. Although the wiring is 30yo there is no reason why it should be suspect as it's well secured/bound, and it doesn't carry a large current.

Hey DQIKST!........I think River may be onto the problem there. Another area to check next time it mucks up .......run a seperate earth to the body of the gauges using aligator clips if she lights up its a dicky earth......I had a similar intermitant fault in a Valiant (second best car ever built) years ago....ended up there was an open circuit within the earth wire insulation, it was 'cause the conductor was joined within the insulation when the wires were new. I hate intermittant faults.......Cheers Phil.
