Thumbs up Re: Too Many Rules?

Toymods does have rules, but they are there for a reason and they are not that difficult to abide by in my opinion. Read the agreement before posting and everything will be cool and fruity.

The rules set by Toymods are not that strict compared to another forum I frequent. I've been part of this *other* forum since 2002 and over the years, the number of users have grown from about 10, 000 to nearly 56, 000 members. As the number of users grew, so did the number of trouble makers and wookies Due to some of these turds, the forum was closed down for a while only to return with a new set of moderators and new rules. As a result of this make over, I've found the forum a less appealing place to frequent as it no longer feels like a forum. There are too many restrictions as to what you can and can't post and I think they are stupid rules. One of the new rules in place in a majority of this *other* forum states that you cannot post anything that is considered "chatty", otherwise the thread will be deleted. WTF is a point of a public forum if you CANNOT fricking CHAT about certain topics?!! Another gripe that I have is that most threads are being deleted for unknown reasons, leaving people to post stupid threads such as "Are my threads being deleted?". At least here on Toymods, the moderators will jump and on tell you HOW you have breached the user agreement etc.

If you think Toymods has too many rules, here is ONE example from the forum I've been moaning about: The section is called Home, Lifestyle > House, Interior + Decorating:
    Hello all,

Please note that House, Interior + Decorating section is for discussing the exterior, interior and location of the house, garden, household appliances and decorating.

As most of you can tell from the section title, it is NOT for discussing relationship, friendship, parents, personal conflicts, neighbour problem, legal issues, issues relating to living with someone, rental arrangements, house-share arrangements, renting issues, money issues (including but not limited to mortgages and savings), cost of living, siblings, pets, or any aspect of finance. Questions about financial products should be addressed to an appropriate professional or a financial institution, and NOT asked here.
Basically, only the physical aspects of a house can be discussed in this section (exterior, interior, location and garden).

Please do not ask questions that you can easily find by contacting a shop/company etc or by doing a search on ***** or on search engines such as Google.

You cannot advertise for housemates/flatmates/place to rent/place to buy etc anywhere on ***** forum either.

While it's OK to discuss cooking appliances, the threads on such items will be moved to Food, Drinks + Entertaining because you'll get more replies there, since cooking is discussed in that section.

It is against the user agreement to post any topic that does not clearly fit into one of the sections on ***** forum.

Please note that replying to posts that are not permitted on ***** forum, other than to say that it is not permitted, is also deemed to be a violation of ***** forum user agreement.

    Regards,

    ***** Moderators
^^^Don't all those rules just turn you off from posting?!! Anyways, I just wanted to say that as a person who has been around on forums (and Toymods) for many years, I believe the rules set by this car club are fantastic and not too restrictive at all. Kudos to all the moderators

Remember, this is not the Trading Post or your local classifieds.

it was in the misc section for a reason, im a member aswell.....

and it was deleted from there for a reason. Certainly to push your luck by posting it in the "Toyotas" section wasn't the smartest.
It doesn't fit in with the rules.
Further enquiries about this matter need to be dealt with via the board email [email protected], future PMs will be ignored as per the rules.

yes but i had it in the MISC section firstly......and yes it wasnt a smart move to putr it into the toyota section but i was annoyed, lol

also where in the rules DOES IT SAY IT HAS TO BE A TOYOTA?

    cheers, blake

Um the section is called Toyota's for sale it doesn't take Einstein to put 2 and 2 together. Though you could argue that a Yamaha is technically a toyota but thats another stroy for another day.

the rules for those dont want to search.....

Here are the rules & posting privileges for the Classifieds Section:
The board were tired of the previous forum being used as a free "Tradingpost" by too many people, & as our main focus is now to be a technical forum, posting priveliges have been introduced depending on your reputation status.

Toyotas For Sale, Toyotas Wanted, Parts Wanted are open to any approved user to use.

Miscellaneous Items For Sale are open only to Financial Members to start a thread, and then anyone can post. Note that this section is for non car related items only.

The other sections are closed for posting for those who don't have enough reputation points and are not Financial members of the Toymods Club.

If you have questions relating to reputation, then do a search of the FAQs, its all been covered.

Posting of items in the wrong section to get around the Posting priveliges will be severly frowned upon & will be dealt with accordingly.

    The rules:
No posting of items for other people. This is a free forum, so anyone is entitled to try to sign up & post for themselves.

Posting up of links to Ebay auctions, etc that have something of interest to the forum members is now no longer allowed unless it is your own items after 13/09/06
Otherwise you can use this link Ebay Toyota,

    No SMS sp33k.

No Expressions of Interests (EOI). You're either selling an item or you're not.

No highjacking of others' threads for your own gain.

No Sale bashing. If you haven't got something positive to say, either confine it to a PM or don't post it.

No auctions. This is not Ebay

No commercial Advertising unless authorised by the board. If you're interested in sponsoring the forum to allow you to advertise, please contact the board

No group buys without prior approval from the board

If you have multiple items that fit into the same section, they should be grouped into one post for that section (I'm sure you wouldn't like it if your posts disappeared off the front page because someone else made 25 posts selling individual items). Items by the same seller that fit into different sections can be posted in their relevant sections. But no doubling up. We consider this Spamming.

ah fuck it - this website is NOT the club

it is a technical website to support the toyota technical community. that was always the plan, and is moderated to suit this purpose.

the social side of the club is not actively discouraged on these forums - thats what the 'converions' section of the tech forum is for - to promote and discuss the fun side of the tech end. HOWEVER... the social side of the club does NOT extend to fun and frivolity in the off topic section. this is a TECH forum. not a child care centre.

the off topic section was set up due to the fact that someone will ALWAYS post some crap, so its better in there than in the tech section - it is NOT designed as a cultural hive of social activity. clearly this aim has been misinterpreted in the whole, give a yard, take a mile mentaility. perhaps the whole thing should just be scrapped to avoid the hassle and confusion (not to mention the ongoing whinny posts!!)

you want a fun place to hang out all day at work and read drivvel, join another forum where this is the intended purpose ffs!

I was going to raise this arguement. Look under my bonnet and it clearly states 'YAMAHA' on my engine block

    Blake,

in understand your comments about the Toymods Car Club being more than a technical discussion group - and it is! Toymods Car Club is a social car club with an emphasis on modifying Toyotas.

    But...

THE FORUMS ARE NOT THE CLUB.

The forums are a service provided by the club for the benefit of it's members and the greater Toyota community. The purpose of the forums is to develop and share a technical knowledge base to help harbour and build the Toyota enthusiast scene.
The other parts that the forum provides are secondary in nature, and are not the explicit intention of the forum (classifieds, non-car discussion, events sections).

Please keep that in mind before you continue with your ranting.

i agree, but the forum leads people to the club..... i dont know how many people are actuall members of teh club....but most wouldnt be members if they did not go thru the forum firstly.....

you have to have a good representation to draw people into the club......but sometimes on the forum...with so many rules and constantly being reminded of this and that....

feel like your being told to sit in the corner like in primary school, lol

    cheers, blake

treat it like a tech forum and the rules wont seem nearly as intrusive

im sure if toymods further devellops its reputation as a world leader in toyota technology, then people will continue to join the club for the right reasons

If we're going to start talking about old forum members, then I'll happily get into that topic.. How far back do you want to go? I totally agree with a lot of other long time members in that the OLD forum WAS better in a sense. In fact most of the people who are happy with the current rules ARE long term members (eg. Ed, Oldcorollas etc) and will remember back to the era I'm thinking of.. Main reason why the OLD forums were better:
We did not HAVE an Outhouse/Off-Topic section at all. The Toymods Forum is still a great place to visit, however over time I have begun to regret being one of the people who welcomed the Outhouse section when it was first added back in the OLD forums..

A lot of the OLD members who no longer enjoy the forums or visit as much have been turned off for the reason that the forums have become much less tech oriented and more of a hangout for people to post useless dribble. To me it's a great shame to lose people like that from this community. You may hear people complain about too many rules, too much moderation etc etc.. Sure, they may be unhappy about it but it never used to be required. The OLD forums were pretty much completely self-moderated but with more and more people joining it simply becomes harder to control..

In a nutshell, what you're seeing at the moment with heavier moderation of a particular rule/ideal has happened plenty of times before, and will happen plenty more times in the future. It will steer the direction of the forums until people get the general idea, and then the heavy handed approach will probably lessen. Realistically it is only the Off-Topic and Classifieds sections that come under any major moderation, and that is probably because they are the two sections that cause the greatest amount of embarrassment to the club.

Hope I haven't come across as harsh at all because that isn't what I have intended from this post (most people will know I generally steer clear of posting anything controversial in this type of thread). Let's all just get back to enjoying our Toyotas which is what this place is really about

    Cheers,
    Paul.
