measure it just below the ring land. It will also pay to measure across the crown of the piston too.
currently i have my motor (smallport 4age) at the engine builders waiting to be bored to accept brand new O.S GZE pistons, i gave then the 4age rebuild guide that had 4age piston to bore clearance, in which you measure 40mm up from the bottom of the piston skirt, however if you follow this procedure for the GZE pistons this places you right on the oil ring grove, which cant be the right place to meassure piston sizes. anyone have any experience or a GZE rebuild guide?
EDIT: answers found check bottom of thread!
cheers
craig.

my engine builder is concered that toyota gives such a descriptive insrtuctions for a 4age that it must be of some importance, as thus is concerened with just measureing bellow the ring land.
im in desperate need for a gze manual or some specs regaurding piston to bore clearance, and where to measure this clearance.
4age toyota manual has measure at right angles to piston pins and 42mm from the bottom edge of the skirt.
ill scan the page tonight for you if you want.
yea i have the diagram for the 4age two but my 4agze pistons have a different skirt design to the ge ones (shorter) and if i was to measure the 42mm up on the GZE pistons i end up above the #1 ring
Thats right, forgot about the short skirt on the gze as i have always used custom after std bore in any of them.
i would go just below the ringland on stock if it was me, but someone would have to a japanese gze manual on here.
what you may need to do is get a std 4age piston measure the 42mm from the skirt and see where that ends up being on the std piston.
I.e it maybe 5mm below the ring land or something like that. I would then just measure the GZE piston in the same spot as that.
Make sense?????

edit: just reread..... pic in manual shows just under rings
ok measuring it in a relitive spot from GE to GZE makes sence. now what clearance do i use? i thought the norm for a forged piston (what the stock GZEs are sposed to be) was a bigger clearance than for a cast piston?
the engine builder and i spent 30mins on the phone to toyota japan this arvo and go no where! according to them the 4agze and 4age use the same piston!???
4agze clearance is 0.12-0.14mm
realy? f#$k yea i just spent 2 hours on the net searching for that! thank you!Originally Posted by Mr Revhead
where did that come from? is there any information regaurding how/where to measure it?
measure the bore side to side ie not cambelt to flywheel ends.
minus the piston diameter from that.
theres ya clearance
ok but how far up the piston?
you mean the bore
measure it at the top, 10mm down, middle then bottom 10mm up
thats gives you the size of the bore and
then measure the piston as above
subtract that from the bore size.
if its out of spec on any of those spots, rebore.
