    Default Issues - 1GGTE into RA28 (yes another 1!)

    Heya guys.

going by all the guides im positioning the motor in the engine bay with the gearbox
attached and using the gbox crossmember's front most holes on the chasis' rear most
    holes.

Using a excell radiator (slimmer) in place of the std one the harmonic balancer is fowling on it.

Thought it was because std mounts had the motor lifted ... so cut xmember (engine)
mounts off andlowered it back in... no good.

I need to know how far back to move this thing hopefully without tailshaft mods.
Pictures would be good too! Ive got some from Stradlaters site but it seems his motor was moved wayyyyyy back???

    Cheers

when i did this conversion it bolted up fine, the standard radiator event fit (just with 5mm gap)
i used the aftermarket 18r engine mounts from repco and it was fine. not sure why your having to cut the mounts onece the engine was sitting on those mounts the gear box xmember should line up with 2 of the holes on the chasis easy.
    hope this helps
let me know if you need more and ill try help out

Ideally you want the motor as low and far back as you can for weight distrubution.

the fact of the matter is that gearbox and tailshaft mods will be required to get a better balance and a better final result.

Keep in mind if you are changing the diff from a T-series to F or G series that the nose of the diff centre will be longer anyway, more than likely requiring tailshaft mods anyway.

yeah ra60 xmember so not a direct bolt up ... and the mounts are higher.

got 20mm clearance right now .. figured out i have to reverse the rubber bolted to
the gear box as well ... which pulls the box back and the cross member forward to the rear holes

feel a little stupid now looking back.

    should fit fine now.

also had a look at the radiator in my car ... OMG 3 CORE! SCORE!

Yea,h I was gonna say, it shouldn't be that hard mate, I've seen many just 'bolt' in place without modifying anything. :-)

one way to see if the engine and box are located in the foward-aft direction properly is to look at the tailshaft. if the metal dust cover thing on the tailshaft is flush with the end of the gearbox dust cover ring then its probly sitting in the right spot.

im not actually sure what that thing is called...its probly just for stopping rocks and dirt, not dust

looked where the w50 dust cover ended and it was on the start of the 3rd rib in the tunnel
(there is a 3 ripple wave in the floor above the gearbox)

then checked the w58 in my project shell and it was in the same place so it seems right.
80mm clearance from harmonic to front chasis.

taking into account the radiator is 50mm thick that leaves 30mm for thermos

but measuring shows i ca move the radiator forward 10-20mm and still fit he cooler and thermos and still have 20mm clearance so should be fine.

sits just like this one... see 2-3 inches off the firewall

think i got 10mm between harmonic balancer and radiator.

i pulled my whole front apron foward by hand - about 10mm.

    using stock radiator

after i found the above pick this morning im more comfortable where the engine is sitting now.

decided to use the cast mounts though as the std ra60 ones had to come off anyhow
to lower the motor and i thought rather that modify the steel mounts and crossmember
mounts id retain std cast mounts and alter the xmember munts to suit.

So you've done it by drilling a hole straight through the cross member?

I've got about 20 mm between my harmonic balancer and the std 3core radiator

not drill through per say ... ill be adding a chunk or box section as a replacement
mount to accept the soarer/supra round threaded mount... need to asses
std mounting 1st to adapt to the ra60 crossmember.

got a crap radiator for mock ups this arvy/tommorow so will have to check clearance again.

looking at your setup but Stradlater you seem to have extended the gearbox crossmember
    a fair way backwards ?

    Cheers

Yeah the gearbox crossmember has been modified pretty well. It's an animal of a cross member.
