Dizzy could be out 180 degrees, very easy to do.

Hi, this has been driving me insane for the passed 3-4months ive just taken my electronic distributor out of my 2TG to put my old points dizzy back to see if it still goes, but after i had installed my points dizzy back in i tried starting her up and it wont fire? the timing marks were alligned and so was the rotor on the dizzy to fire first cylinder but it still wont fire?? is there any other way i can fix this? i believe that i have jumped a tooth on the gearing which is why it will not fire, but i am not sure![]()
One thing i havnt tried yet is to pull the cam cover off and rotate the crank until the marks on the cam gears allign straight up?
any help much appreciated, if you know you can fix this you are more than welcome to come over and do it for me! i will pay you generously! im located in Brisbane
cheers.

You need to check if your getting fuel, and then spark. 2TG are carbie arent they so gravitiy feed fuel? It might be hard to check if you have fuel but during cranking you should be able to tell.(Sorry i have never looked at a 2TG)
hey,
do you have the right points gap and degrees (dwell angle)?
0.4 to 0.5 mm and should be between 52 and 54 degrees. also did you put the rotor button back on (i keep forgettting to do this).

thanks for the replys so far, ive got fuel because ive got an electric fuel pump but also during cranking every now n then, itl just BANG and shoot a huge pile of black smoke out my exhaust, so that means im getting spark also.. im really thinking its firing the other cylinders except the first.. my gap is good and dwell angle i dont have a meter to measure that but its always started with this dizzy...
hey, how do you tell if your gap is good when you dont know your dwell angle? also what ignition coil are you using. I remember i bought a bosch coil, i forgot to get the one that didnt need a resistor and a couple of days later.. bang!! big back fire it started to smoke and i busted the coil oilor some simmilar liquid was leaking out. it was supose to be a gt40rt.

it doesnt have to be perfect just as long as it starts then i can fiddle with getting that correct but my gap is good it has started everytime, im getting spark via Bosch GT40 R for use with the external resistor so i am using the correct coil.Originally Posted by w810sc
how do you rotate the dizzy 180deg? so Num1 point on the cap faces the opposite direction?
Yep, just turn the distributor to point the other way and drop it back in. Should slide into the oil pump drive perfectly if you get it right. Effectively if you are 180 degrees out you will be firing at the top of the exhaust stroke rather than the compression stroke, this is why you get the bang and smoke out the exhaust.

yep, i think it may be 180out, ill just need to get a set of working solexs to test it out again as mine are shot to shit..Originally Posted by Snyper
best way to check firing setup is to take off rocker cover so you can see the cams and then with the spark plugs out turn motor over in a clockwise direction and follow the sequence - inlet cam opens and piston drops - inlet valve closses and the piston comes up to top dead centre - check that both cams are on the minimum diameter and then creep up to top dead centre as shown on the crank balancer - this is top dead firing position for number one piston put the dizzy in and double check firing order of plug leads - should fire straight up!!
