check the map sensor wiring. if it has one or afm. im not upto date on my 4age's
seeing how it wont start first up tends to lean away from it being that but its another avenue to look at.
Hi there,
A friend of mine has an AE82 with a 100kW 4AGE engine and recently he's had a starting problem where after priming the fuel pump (ignition to ON) and trying to start the car, the engine cranks, runs, then dies straight away. We've checked fuel pressure and all seems fine and also checked spark at the coil and leads which is fine also.
He suspects the fuel pump relay but I'm not sure on this. We've checked all fuel lines, fuel pump works as it's priming the car. Another thing to note is it won't start right away, only after priming two or three times.
Any suggestions on what it could be?
Thanks..

has he done anything to the timingwhen he put the motor in? has he takien off the dizzy or taken the cams out or taken the timing belt off? etc.
? i dont think he put the engine in ?
but if he has, timing could be a likely possibility.
will it always stall straight away, or does it vary, how long does it run for before stalling, is it a rough idle etc etc.

if it is doing it all the time it may be that the cat converter has melted and is blocked
happened to me a while back
Woah, this has got to be the most helpful forum I've ever been on!
I think cuzzo may be onto something with the immobilizer. The problem started not long after he had a wiring fault with the car where some wires shorted on the chassis. I'll tell him to try bypassing the immobilizer and see how it goes from there.
The engine was running fine, timing, etc. not long ago. The problem just happened recently..
100kw is MAP sensored. I would check both the map sensor wiring and the vacuum hose that goes from the inlet manifold to the map sensor. If either are not connected the engine will not go.Originally Posted by BeRad
Also to check your fuel pump, etc - disconnect the hose that goes from the fuel rail to the cold start injector on the inlet manifold (at the injector end) - if it pisses fuel out at pressure when you kick the engine , then you're getting fuel.

but with you saying it had a wiring fault im leaning back toward the map sensor not working as it should......if it only runs for 1 second or 2 then im leaning even more toward that.

another possibilty, maybe dirty ISCV? but that wouldnt cause it stall, would it?

How long has it been since he changed the fuel filter?

Updated 15/7/2007............ yes, I need to pull my finger out.
Fuel filter replaced recently, all vacuum and PCV hoses cleaned.
If its not the immobliser, its probably a MAP issue.
I had the same issue with my AFM GZE. I disconnected the AFM for some reason and didnt reconnect it properly. The motor would start, cough splutter, then die.
Connected it properly and she went beautiful.
I told my friend to test the MAP sensor. He unplugged it and the car started but ran roughly, so I guess that's the problem.
He was quoted AU$400 for a new one from Toyota! :s Anyone got one they can part with?
