    Default Re setting valve clearences.

Before I lost my licence I put some bigger cams in a recoed smallport head and put that on my bigport block and then put it all back together, but when the engine was running there was a tapping noise coming from the head, I was told it is most likelybecause the valve clearances weren't set properly for the bigger cams.
Now since the head gasket is blown and I want to get the car back on road for when I get my licence back, should I send the head off to get the valve clearances done before I change the HG, or can it be done with the head still on the block?
    Thanks for any info.
    Cheers.

It's easier to do with the head off, but it can be done either way.

what sort of cams are they i.e lift etc.

Some cams with higher lift require shimless / shim under buckets

I though Linden sent off your head to get the valves set at the right tolerances by abe?

I think it was going to go to Abe, but he didn't have enough time so it went to one of Lindens mates brothers in law or something like that.

And the cams aren't big enough to need shimless.

So are we talking lobe to shim clearance then? If so, grab yourself a set of angled feeler gauges and the cross-reference chart.

Yes, need to check clearances for each one{bucket} and then order the shims to suit and swap them for your current shims.
Take your time and get it as close as humanly possible as you need the right clearances to stop the cam lob slapping the buckets and you dont want it to close. the way it is now its slapping the buckets{causes wear} and your want get the same out of your cam profile

p.s i have the factory manual if you want specs or a shim chart.

Can you write up the specs and put it here? Also is it possible copy the shim chart and whack it on here too? Always good to have this info on the thread and it will help others.

Took from my last post to now to get my scanner working, had to reload software, bloddy scanners! Then i thought you couldnt see it until i zoomed the pics!lmao

shim charts, ignore the 4afe as they use the same shim chart as 4ag.

i kept them all 100% so decent size files! any problems give me a yell as i also did the shim charts at 600dpi but very big files

I have the removal tool and a bag of shims. If you are not too far away you could bring the head around and set them up.

shit, thanks for all the info!
There is no way I am gonna try and do this myself! Its taken me 3 fkn attempts just to properly change a head gasket -Live and learn!
And I don't have the time to sit around and do it, so I am just gonna have to take it to an engine place and make sure it is done properly! Then maybe I can get the head gasket to stay sealed this time round!
Thanks heaps for that offer tho Amichie, much appreciated!
    Cheers.
