    Default Vacuum Advance Query

I have a 88 pintara run about with a CA20E thats getting a bit of refreshing done to it. One thing ive come across with these motors is they run a vacuum advance unit on the distributor.

The ECU for these motors is basically a fuel comp, little else. Now due to the age of the motor its getting harder to find advance units without busted diaphragms and nissan dont sell them anymore (good on ya f!@# datsun!)

What I would like to know is what are my options short of setting a base timing for the motor. Should I bother with getting a ignition comp? If so how much??

Or might I find a unit of a newer motor that will suffice?

    cheers!

one other question. As its not a turbo motor do I have to replace the head bolts when putting the head back on (after a re-co) or will the old ones do?

Try Petroject for the dizzy... they will be able to find you a new replacement dizzy or at worst rebuild the one you've got.

Re: head bolts, if you've paid to have the engine freshened up you might as well spring the couple of extra bucks for new head bolts.

Not totally familiar with the Nissan product but as a rule if the manufacturer says to replace the head bolts then they have a good reason for it. Head bolts done up to a value and then torque turned generally require replacement as they stretch, this provides the correct tension for the given application and they don't generally stretch the same the second time round which leaves them more prone to breakage. Can't help with the vac advance other than blocking it off and running a little more static advance.

This looks like a very promising company in terms of availability of parts. Ill call them tommorow if their open and check the prices.

I really hope they have advance units

    Pintara + Run-about = I really wouldn't bother with either.

ive done my ca20 head gasket twice and havent replaced the head bolts yet.

(before you ask, it wasnt my fault it blew again)

the ca20 timing spec is supposed to be 0 degrees with the vacumn line disconnected, but i wound a few degrees into it for fully sic drag spec YO! hehe

faulty headgasket, basically it failed and blew through no 2 and 3 cylinders. no damage to head or block.
