Default Help with these two BVSV's

    Hey,

Just in the process of getting a few nick nacks, and got the two bi-metal vacuum switching valves (bvsv's) pictured below.
My engine uses two BVSV's on the coolant bypass pipe (which also has the engine coolant temp sensor and cold start time switch on it). One is for the charcoal canister system and one is for the EGR system.
The one to the left (black) is for EGR. Toyota part # 90925-05073. My manual states that this BVSV is closed below 40°C and is open above 54°C.
The one to the right (blue) is for charcoal canister. Toyota part # 90925-05058. It is closed below 35°C and open above 54°C.
Now, i would like to know, can I use one of the black BVSV's instead of the blue...Will the 5°C difference cause any problems? Basically i have two perfect condition black BVSV's.

    Thanks for any help.

Temperature-wise I don't foresee any problems, but design-wise there could be a bit of a stumbling block. I have the same BVSV's on my Celica and they are located in the same place and do the same job. My concern is the construction of the valves because the blue one looks to take it's vacuum from two different sources, where as the black one doesn't.

Are the threads the same? Same diameter and pitch as well? From here the blue one looks to be a tad bigger.

Just my advice here, but source one from a wrecker, should be cheap enough... and then you know you've done the job properly too.

    Hey Andrew,

The threads and pitch are the same. Ones just a bit mucky, so its hard to tell.
In terms of operation, they both seem to do the same thing. I heat it up, and it switches (air blows through the other pipe), and cooling it off with freezer spray, closes it off again.
So, operation wise, they seem to be the same...but yea, not 100% sure... they have different part numbers and there inital temprature is a bit different.
    Kind Regards,
    Kurt.

That's what mine looks like under the bonnet, and one side of the blue BVSV (the top part) goes through a 'jet' which leads up to the "P" section of the throttle body vacuum ports, and the other part of the BVSV goes to the charcoal canister. The black BVSV has the top part receiving a signal from the EGR modulator and the bottom part direct from the EGR valve itself.

So, what does this do for you? If the BVSV's open and close (are functional) as you say, then based on assumptions above I guess it's worth a try. At worst I think the engine will idle rough or hesitate on you while driving if the BVSV isn't doing it's job.

    Hope that helps.
