I'd assume they would interchange, pulling the tray off a ute isn't hard (they are bloody heavy), and utes are fairly simple creatures...
Just wondering if its possible (and if possible, if its difficult) to retrofit a flat tray hilux ute with a ute bed/styleside?
I'm planning to buy a cheap early hilux soon to cart my mountain bike around in, either a RN30 2wd or RN4x 4x4, but they all seem to be tray back and I don't want a flat tray.
Funnily enough its not altogether difficult to get a ute bed from the wreckers.... I did know a guy with a 2nd gen hilux 2wd with a 3rd gen lux bed on it, so there seems to be some interchangeability between years?

My mate did exaclty what you are planning his only drama was finding a tray in good nick and a colour that matched his cabin.

Ring a rural toyota dealership, a lot get imported as utebacks and converted to tray tops, got a white one about 18 months ago for $200.

Excellent. Colour doesn't matter as it will all get a lovingly applied export quality matt black duco anyway.
i did the other way round...replaced welll body with alloy flat tray on RN41 2wd. No dramas at all getting old tray off so cant see there bein any when fitting, well body just bolts on, four or six bolt points not sure, jus make sure the rubbers on the tray you buy are ok. Few mates to help you lift the tray and you'll be ssweet.
Mate, they use the same mount points, for both tray and a styleside. the only thing to look out for is the bodyines are different from series to series.
What year is the ute? Also is it a single, extra, or duel cab?
Some models like mine (92), there is not such thing as a 4wd and 2wd styleside.
Will be chasing a '79-83 long wheelbase, single cab, 2wd.
think your going to have fun finding that, but check wreckers, tradingpsot etc. see what you can findOriginally Posted by floody
