    Default Variable Rep Value

    Hi,

As some of us get higher in rep and have quite a few posts under our belts we are now capable of giving a big +ve or -ve rep to someone.

However, sometimes I find myself hesitating 'cos I don't think the recipient of my rep deserves the full amount - be it +ve or -ve.

Is it possible to have the ability, when giving/taking rep, to provide how much you rep you wish to offer?

Find someone you know with less rep than you to neg-rep them first, that way it'll even out the way you want it to

    River,

I think last time I noticed I was able to give about 7 or 8 +rep and about 2 or 3 neg rep. So if someone was only deserved of a few point I could give them a + hit then a neg hit to make it more appropriate.

I agree though it would be good at times to choose (within the range you are entitled to) how much rep to giveth or taketh away

You can't doo it captain, once you've given rep you can't give it to that person until you give rep to another 10 ppl so that'd be a repping binge, and by the time you could rep that person again you'd have given out too much rep for a day lol.

I think i'm giving out +13 at the moment, Ed found that amusing the other day, I still have no issues giving out pos rep but for neg rep sometimes it just seems harsh taking away -6.

But you need to wait 15 reps before you can get back to that person. So, do you give them some rep and after a while you get back to them and slap them to even it out a bit?

I guess it could be done. Rep someone with a "Nice post - good info" comment, and after 15 reps I come back and slam them with "But it wasn't THAT good!"

PS: Is it 10 reps before coming back? I get confused 'cos there's something like 10 or 15 reps you can do in a 24hr period. I must of got the two confused.

Yes, only within the range you are capable of giving/taking.

I agree with Rona also that there are times you feel a tad bad when you slap someone with a bunch of -rep when you'd prefer to just give them a "flea in the ear".

Also, in the early days we were all capable (except Admin) of giving/taking a single point or two. This means that people had to put in some effort and gradually get their rep up so they can have avatars and post in some of the classified sections. Now, with some big hitters these people can get a mass of points in one post. I'm not saying this is bad, but it seems to me that it would be good to have the ability to give less points to make the new people work a little more in getting their rep up.

Of course, a brilliant post is worthy of more reputation.

i feel that currently any neg rep i make, creates significant resentment in the reppee..
    ie +18(19?) and -9...

however, i neg on the premise if that the person i negged picks up their game, then i will pos rep them at the next chance... so they still end up 8 or 9 ahead. (unfortunately, some people do not realise this)

until such time as there is variable rep, i will just give rep like i only had +-1 rep power

I've often wanted this feature, since I have had high rep power from the beginning.

Wish there was a way (other than using the Admin Stick) but there isn't.

I couldnt see how giving people too much rep would be a problem, its not like its money.

Perhaps look at it like since you have higher rep, your opinion on these forums is more important and therefore has a greater impact on what another members reputation is than someone that only just joined and knows very little.

If someone with 700+ rep points thinks info someone has posted is good info, IMHO that means that person actually does deserve a good amount of +ve points.
