It's most likely the valve & very little chance of the bucket sticking.
It's an intake valve, right? The exhaust get hot enough to burn away most oil, and what's left is hard enough to open up the guide rather then stick, plus they've got extra cleanence to begin with, in my experience.
The intake stems are leaking and don't get hot enough, so a gummy buildup is causing it. I think the lubrication properties of the different oils isn't the problem, it's the difference in the smegma left on the stem when they've partially burned.

Well its decided to do it again. Random valves sticking open & it doesn't have to be a cold morning now.
Think you may be right about gum build up on inlet valves, Don't really want to pull the head off again. Anyone got a cheap red top motor for sale?

Prob a good idea to take the head off and get it reco'd. That way you will basicly have a fresh top end and a guarantee its all gonna be good. I know its alot of hassle, but beats changing the engine with a second hand one that you have no idea of its condition.

I don't want to do to much work to a 200k+ blue top motor.

Took cam & all buckets out today after its been sitting a few day and was able to push each valve down easy & they all close fine.
Then i tried the same with the buckets in & a few got stuck so i think ive found the problem.

Buckets & bores look fine & I'm 100% they are all in original locations. About the only thing i can do without getting to deep at this stage is give them all a linish & see how it goes from there.

    Thanks for help again.

linish the outside of the buckets and check to see where they go in the head to make sure there are no dags ect - a light sand/file might help if there are casting dags or anything rough to make em stick. just an idea.

The bores look fine so i linished the buckets. No. 6 & 8 inlet i had to do a fair bit of work to(only the bottom 5mm) & no. 5 needed minimum work, all others were fine.
I tested by pushing them down fully & they don't stick anymore.
Doest look like there was any damage to the bores but without removing valves its a bit hard to measure.

Bit rough but hopefully it fixes the problem.
