    Default "Ideal" Suspention solutions.

Ok, so we all know the suspention basics, it keeps the wheels between the car and the road. But let's take it a little further...say you weren't bound by much in the way of existing limitations...like, for example...if you made your own car. What are the crucial points to making a good suspention setup? Everything from ratios of wheelbase to track, equal/unequal length wishbones, roll centres, suspention arm lenght, onboard shocks....throw it all this way!

    Cheers, RM.

suspension dsign is always a compromise.
car needs to handle vertical bumps as well as roll, whilst keeping tyres as flat to the road as possible.

the amount of roll will play a big part in choosing which suspenSion design is best.

basically, you need to look atthe camber/caster/toe curves in 3D for each design, and play with it to make sure tyres stick on road at the right time

there are plenty of books available with from basic to advanced design guides, and it would seem a bit redundant to copy it all here...

but personal experiences away from the norm would be interesting...

As always, you're right on the head of the nail. I'll look into it, but peoples personal opinions would be awesome. I was more after basic design philosopies, nothing too in-depth...What I'm thinking now (and this is VERY basic) was:

Double wishbone front and rear, adjustable anti-roll bar over the top, inboard coilovers, all rose-jointed (maybe)...

Awesome stuff, I can't wait for the rest...any chance of parts 1-3 as a PDF? I might need to get in touch with you down the track about building a tough 1UZ too

Ed, those matrices scare me... i was discussing with someone today how matrices are used for complex diffusion functions.... matrices suck

    Easy.

    Plus a really smooth road.

Quick quote - "Any suspension will work, as long as you don't let it."
They all have their pro's and con's, but generally the best is a double wishbones non-parallel unequal length setup. Springs and damping are another major thing - Springs aren't too bad but for packaging almost always the coil spring wins out. Damping is pretty heavy science, and the old rule of you get what you pay for is pretty much true.

Understanding suspension and all the kinematics involved is by far the most complicated area of any car. The variables are huge and as mentioned above compromises must be made.

Well...I've always wanted to build my own car, and Lotus7 replicas are cool, but something a litte more extreme. Rough design sketch is mid-mount 1UZ power, possibly supercharged, transaxle to the rear drive, space frame chassis and the best suspention and braking setup I can design...it'll be for light competition duties, but also a half-streetable car as well...
