im sure with the dollars spent on those things, they could make an IRS setup using exactly the same components etc if they wanted to.Originally Posted by floody
If you want to do that to a cressida or something similar - either buy a MS123 crown (IRS) and pimp that...5 stud for wheels already too! OR buy an MX73, which have IRS standard.Originally Posted by floody
Just a suggestion if your into that sort of thing![]()

Indeed they probably could. Of course someone has to pay to develop it.....And they'd need to nobble it while the less high budget teams convert and so forth. Right now the V8 supercars technical regulations provides good parity, so I would imagine thats why it stays relatively as it is.
Sorry to take it OT.
Can you buy a Commodore or Falcon with a 5 litre V8, 8 throttles, Motec injection, Holinger gearbox and so on? No, and yet that's what the Supertaxis run. The fact is those cars have nothing in common with actual Commodores and Falcons. Everything is custom built, but there are very strict rules about what they can and can't do, and live axle is one of them. Go and look it up for yourself if you like, but believe me they'd run IRS if they could! All the super tourers, improved production, WRC etc teams use IRS.

WOAH~! old thread but suprised i missed out reading this one.
in one of my Zoku mags' theres a how too to installing Toyota IRS into a Gx70v wagon, there was even a kit you could buy with some small sections, and the bolts needed to fit it all up to the stock tailshaft.
if i was to do this conversion how ever, i'd look at S13 rear end and get adjustable arms (so you can dial your camber in at any amount of deg's you want) bad point is 1) there about 50mm wider than std toyota IRS and 2) you need to make the strut tops in the rear stronger as the S13 doesnt have any spring seats.
Solid rear axles work well on flat roads (ie no bumps). They have very good camber control when cornering or accelerating etc. Hit a bump and that's a different story.
Just a note, no surgery to chassis rails.
1. Surgery was performed to the lower control arm mounting points, just boxed out.
2. Surgery to remove pan bar mount and install two mounts off diff centre.
3. Surgery to front cross member of IRS.
As noted thought, it now has IRS, it now has F-series.
I did all the work myself and spent more time checking and double checking that actual fabrication work. The good thing with most of this style IRS is that parts are interchangable. I'm running RT142 front sub frame and drive sharfts, MX73 diff centre, diff sub frame, ventilated discs. About to start working on fitting adjustable coil overs to it.
Cheers, Neil.

I did a lot of research into IRS conversions when I was going to use a Starion setup in my blue Scorpion, that would have been pretty much a bolt-in job as the bodyshell still had the mounting points for the Jap car's IRS. Still, it would have been a lot of work with the car being off the road for a LONG time.
HRT have gone IRS now. END OF STORY

heaps of good comments and if you REALY need that excessive neg to ge that particular look then IRS like on the cars that look like this is the only way to go.
however if you didnt want to go stupid neg you actually can get camber on a live rear end, not 10 degrees like in those boso cars but you may get 3 degrees maybe more.
some race cars that HAVE to use a live rear axle sometimes do this depending on the choice of tyres in the clas etc etc.
at least the car will actually be drivable unlike running 10 degrees of neg....................................dont get me wrong i love the look its just not functional
