What sort of noise is it? Nocking? Griding?
Hey all,
Just a quick question for everyone. Occasionally, and it's becoming more prominent, my fuel pump gets noisier than normal. Often this is accompanied by a slightly lumpy idle which i'm assuming may be linked, although with my car, the ECU is often the problem.
The pump is an external Walbro, in the factory bracket, using the factory pickup with mesh filter on it. I've then got a stock MA61-style filter mounted on the engine block.
Anyone have any ideas what this could be? I've got no resistor on it, it just runs 12V all the time. I'm going to pull it off and check for any blockages, and I was thinking of replacing the filter on the engine before I go away, but I thought i'd run it past everyone.
Cheers,
Nathan

It's a Walbro, so it's a whine. It's always whined, and they don't have a reputation for being super quiet, but this has been noisier than normal.

External, or internal?
I'd certainly check the filter, my bosch pump started to whine kinda loudly when I drove up to QLD last year. I thought it might have been overheating a bit, as the fuel in the surge tank was getting pretty warm and so was the weather, and my boot was chockers with tools & spares & luggage, but it ended up that some of my mountains of luggage was squashing one of the fuel lines and causing a bit of restriction.
Hasn't done it since.
Could be a voltage issue, maybe it is too high or low. Could check this easily as well![]()

do you have a surge tank? does the return from the rail go back to said surge tank or main tank?
i had a noisy pump issue due to heat caused by small surge tank, fuel returning from hot fuel rail and recirculating constantly.
Goes back into the fuel tank, factory GA61 external pump setup.

Yeah I read that, just that I'm not familiar with an external HP pump setup & wanted to confirm it.Originally Posted by JustCallMeFrank
Heat shouldn't be an issue then, check for any restrictions (including your filter of course) and any vulnerable sections of fuel line. Been rallying lately, or hit any big rocks? Maybe a line has been crushed a bit....
yeah like mentioned, unless something has changed (crushed line etc) maybe your pump is just getting a bid shagged.
I'll have a look, given my habit of running the tank down, there is every likelihood there is some shit around. The noise isn't always there, which makes me think its not the lines being crushed.
I've measured the voltage and found 11.1V at idle at the pump itself, so whether or not thats the problem is unclear, it's definetly A problem though.

I'm not help on the subject.
but Ive also noticed this with my pump(being louder some times than other), mines a bosch motorsport one however.
Mines been running for a long long time now with this being the case and it doesn't seem to affect the car at all.
im running a bosch external pump and its always been loud it does sit very close to the exhaust though i really need to make a shield for it.and i noticed that if im really low onf fuel the whine gets really louder so i always make sure its never below 1/4.
Well, i'm replacing the fuel pump wiring, but I think it may just be the pump itself. Time will tell! It's been doing it for ages now, doesn't really seem to affect the performance, so we'll see. I'll evaluate it come Adaptronic install if it's not improved at all.

haha, the price of doing a conversion. you ALWAYS worry about every little thing. I know I always think something is wrong when its perfectly fine.Originally Posted by JustCallMeFrank
