    Default Securing your number plate

    Hi guys,
I've just had my rego plate stolen by some idiot. Its no doubt been used for a couple of servo drive offs. I'll be getting a new set soon and I was wondering if anybody has found a good way of securing your plate. I'm thinking of getting some tamper proof torx bolts to hold it on. The ones with the little lump in the middle. Anybody got a better idea that doesnt involve me staking out my car every night for the forseable future. Thanks.

they did have some tamper-proof screws but not sure what happened to it, i think the idea was scrapped... i just had screws with a different head, it was opened with an uncommon tool, allenkey or hex set...

    Hi,

Anything that is slightly different will be okay. Make sure the head is round (to stop pliers & spanners) and the centre isn't your bog standard flat or philips type head and you should be okay.

After all, these dudes that steal the plates are looking for something they can rip off quickly and therefore any hindrance will make them move onto the next car and leave yours alone.

The last neighbourhood watch letter we got said that you can just go to any police station and they will give/sell you special screws for number plates that cant be undone.

otherwise just use a power drill with a phillips bit in the end and round off the screw once it is tight.

    That is SA only.
Just go to your local bolt store and buy a few T6 torx bolts with an appropriate bit.

Realistically, just grab some dome head allan bolts. If you want to get tricky, a blob of epoxy in the head should keep them fairly safe.

I've had the same thing happen to one of my cars while it was parked on the front lawn

Pop rivets! Hardly any of these idiots will be walking around with a cordless drill.

I watched two police officers try to remove the numberplates from an old Landcruiser that had no rego and they had no success. They were thwarted by two rounded out and seized phillips head screws

You could always try that method

wouldnt that end up giving people the same screws so that a potential theif could go to the police and get the screwdriver for it?

pop rivets would probably be the best bet i think

Domed allen key headed bolts. I would imagine the tool of choice would be a screwdriver and as mentioned upon seeing your allen key bolts would just move on. It would be easier to just modify your plates for stuff like that with some black tape than try and nick some.

Stainless cap headed bolts with nyloc nuts look good and take time to get off!

    Hi,

Mind you if they're old plates, like the ones that were on my AE71, they'll be rusted on and only an angle grinder will get them off.
