i was 22 at that time.. shannons insured the 1974 RX-2 for around 400 ish, and agreed value of 6,000.. flawless driving history = low risk, plus had a stock engine ()

Justcars did the FTO, for a 25 year old (with custom paint, 18" wheels, momo steering and knob, veliside, AFC etc etc) for 1200 with agreed value of 12,500.. but it was a bitch to claim anything from them and any chance they get, they'd rather give you the cash to fix it yourself..they put down the paint as "metallic" when in fact it was "candy'..(go figure) which is good and bad in some ways..

    Hi,

Hmmm, I might have to check out FamousClassic to see what their prices and service are like. I'm currently with Vigil who gave me a good quote for the old girl. It costs me about $400 a year for a market value of $12,500. I can keep the wreck, choose my repairer and have 24/7 road assistance and limited-distance free towing. When the restoration is complete I'll get it revalued and see how much extra I'm going to have to pay. I'd like to push them for a value of $20-$25k - hehehehe for an old Celica - it will be interesting to see their reaction. Hopefully they'll be cool with that as it's ostensibly a "user pays" system where they'll just charge me more per annum.

Mind you, it's classified as not being my daily driver. I assume if it was a daily driver then the price would be higher.

When she gets her classic plates it will be interesting to see if it gets cheaper or if there are other alternative insurers that are better cost/services for classic rego car.

I was going to use Shannons but their phone manner and attitude put me off. They'd have to be a hell of a lot cheaper than Vigil (which I doubt) before I'd use them.

I compared Vigil with Shannons, Vigil were far cheaper for me and as I quoted it as a "hobbie car" shannons wanted no more than 8000km of driving a year were Vigil say they dont bother counting kms, Vigil also gave me 25k agreed value $400 a year with only photos wanted of the car ,Shannons wanted to inspect it, all that said it was an older car (1962) but still has plenty of mods (6.7 ltr engine instead of 5.4, air bag suspension, 17" wheels instead of 14" all being the so called major mods) compared with my aw11 n/a (stock apart from exhaust) which I found to be a nightmare just to find someone who would insure me with minimum mods and the same went with my ta22, almost perfect driving record 29yrs old, low risk area, I cant work them out!!

i think vigil are now assosciated with famous classic?

Either way i'm with vigil and have been really happy with thier service, my corolla is covered for $11000 and i'm paying just under $1000 a year which is great considering that i'm 22 and have had a 6 month license suspension which occurred in my 1st year of cover with them and the car has a few modifications.

When it came time to renew the insurance they dropped the value to $8000 but after a quick phone call and an email with some photos was sent through the cover was back up at $11000 again.

im happy with Shannons - they currently insure my home contents and my car.

The home contents insurance from Shannons is gun, there is no other isurer that gives you the $10,000 coverage for "automobilia".... meaning spare parts, service manuals, and all that shit we all have in our garage that any other insurance company would only cover us for $1,000 worth.

the multi-car and cross policy discounts also rock.

My aw11 is insured with shannons after just cars would only insure it for 10k. Its 1300 for insured agreed value of 15k and will be upped to 18k once i send them photos.

this thread has gone off topic and could almost move to general car talk.
But to add my 2 cents.
My GF's 1992 soarer was with Shannons, Car is owned outright, and she is 23.
It recently came up for re-renewal and it went from $1200 last year to $1300 this year.
For some unknown reason, this premium increased, despite the fact she's older and wiser (and more graceful), shannons couldn't explain why other than to say costs increasing. I call bull crap as a premium should go down as you get older (to a particular age of say 25), then slowly increase as cpi increases.
A quick ring around to a couple of others put Just cars in front but with mighty high excesses (premium of $950) and a bad reputation.
and from an old thread that Draven posted in we tried Famous Classic. There were a few hoops to jump through in the paperwork (not used to taking a photo of the car, that's for sure), but other than that seemed fine. Premium was around $650 so there is an instant saving of $650 a year. Shannons refused to meet the price.

there seems to be almost enough people in this thread alone to get the discount through famous classic.

I figure that whatever insurance company you choose, they are always going to rob you blind and have any excuse to not pay you, so you may as well find the evil corporate that charges you less for that privelage.

Trying to call these guys but it hasn't been easy. It's either rung out or the person I need to speak to isn't in each time.

I've given them my number so I'll see if they get back to me.

Fark those are good prices man! Do they have certain stipulations such as car must be garaged etc?
    Cheers,

The majority of home insurance companies will cover this but you need to put down on your form what you have. Car parts, computers, cameras, audio-visual systems, jewelry, books and anything else that you deem valuable should be entered into the contract in case you need to make a claim.

Also, it's a good idea to photograph the important/expensive/personal items - burn them to CD and leave a copy of the CD at your parents (or someone you trust) house. In case your home is burgled or burns down etc you can produce the images of the things you have lost. Just make sure you keep the images current and you update your policy so the insurer knows what you have and what you want covered.

Only thing they ask for is 3 point immoboliser. And i always tell them about my mods, I asked: "should I tell you what mods I have or get?" They say: "No need to tell us, whatever mods are legal, its fine".

and the car cannot be parked on the street within 500m of your house. (or at least, that's stipulated on mine, since I told them it wouldn't be)
