    Default rack removal in ae86

    Hey all,

Need to know if it's possible to pull out the rack from an ae86 without yanking out the engine? A mate of mine needs to rebuild his asap.

    Cheers,
    James

Yeah, if you can support the engine in the engine bay you can drop the crossmember and remove it that way. You can just get it out without taking your LCAs out, if you cant get it out that way then just unbolt the LCAs and drop the entire crossmember.
Just make sure you unbolt the uni joint which holds the steering column to the rack before you drop the crossmember, gets nasty if you dont.

I have changed the rack in an AE86 without pulling anything out other than the rack itself (after my brother graciously parked it on someone's front lawn).
IIRC some bolts aren't easy to get to but it beats pulling all the other crap out. I think it slid out through the wheel well in the end.

I managed to change the rack in my KE70 when it had AE86 member/rack in it without too much strife that I can remember.

Mos is on the money. Only the rack need to come out.

    - Remove the tie rods from the steering arms
    - Remove the steering column. You have to undo the pinch bolts on both splined sections and slide it up. Also the bolts have to be fully removed before it'll slide
    - Remove the 4 bolts holding rack mount to the cross member (3 from the top, 1 from the bottom)
    - Slide rack out driver's side of the car. Wobble it til it's free.
