Default Reusing flywheel bolts in a 1GGTE.

I have read here and there that reusing flywheel bolts is not a good idea and have found the toyota part number for replacements.
Is it really important, or just a reccomendation?

If it is a 'must do' has anyone used another manufacturer or bolts from a fastner place?

    Cheers.

Im not a fan of reusing them on any engine as new ones are pretty cheap and you never know what the person did before you.

Technically you could reuse them, but for piece of mind and given how cheap they are, get some new ones.

Yeah i have to admit i've been guilty in the past of reusing flywheel bolts.. But if you like the look of your legs attached to your body then don't skimp out and just buy some new ones.. Last set I purchased were only $40 or even less I think.

have a look at the head of the bolt.
it shold have some dashes on it going around the bolt or a number.
This is the "strength" of the bolt, if you go to a place like coventry's fasteners or whatever it's called, make sure you get the same size and thread bolt with an equal number (of lines) or greater. That way you should retain the same strength as what the original bolts had.

I'd recommend getting new bolts if you don't know the history of the current ones.

I got a new set when I first did my engine, and have been happy to reuse them maybe twice since.

If you end up reusing the ones you have, dab a bit of loctite 262 on them.

    DON'T EVER DO THIS!!!
The toyota bolts have a larger shank? just under the head of the bolt that locates them in the flywheel, that way the flywheel has nowhere to move, and you get to keep your legs.
You don't want 7kg of metal that spins at 7000+ to be loose.

The spanner in my avatar is actually a 16mm, that's why it's still new

I recently made a flywheel for my 1G-GZE and I measured that the bolt hole in the original flywheel was 10.5mm and the bolt was 10mm so bolt actually doesn't locate the the flywheel...

Jayem, mate the point was not to use any old bolt, dosnt matter if it locates it or not does it!

Take a look at the frying wheel bolts on a manual Falcon, and how well they (don't) fit. Then be very glad these things are stuck well down in Massey-Ferguson rev territory.
