Quick question, does the 6 speed from the blacktop fit straight onto the silvertop?
cheers
P.S the blacktop isnt LSD is it?

Will need different driveshafts, and there's a few other mods to mount the 6 speed as well. (I assume you're asking about 6 speed? Title says 5 speed, post says 6?) Anyway, if you're asking about ae111 5 speed, its the same gearbox, C56.
As for the 6 speed, you'll need to make shifter modifications (or fit a factory 6 speed shifter) to be able to engage all the gears. The gearbox mount doesn't line up and needs to be re-drilled, and from memory there's another mod... slave cylinder related perhaps?
If you do a search you should find a conversion guide on it pretty quickly...
I can't find it myself (![]()
) but i do have a doc on my computer that i've copied from the guide that is floating around. For you if you're interested, or anybody else; (there are pictures that go with this but i don't have them)
EDIT: This is obviously for fitting to an ae92. I *think* there are no real differences that would affect you for an ae82, but it would be wise to confirm that before taking this guide as all there is to do/worry about.
C160 HOW TO
Before you fit the box to the car –
1.) Remove the elec. speedo drive from the 6 speed and replace it with the mechanical speedo drive from your old gearbox. I’d suggest it’d be a wise idea to replace the O-ring at the same time and for added insurance use some silicon around the very top of the speedo drive to seal it into the hole it mounts in.
2.) It’s a whole lot easier to replace the two drive shaft seals and the input shaft seal (you’ll need a set of Torx for this) and all up they cost a grand total of $12. Grease them well with some Moly grease.
3.) Remove the reverse light switch which bolts to the top of the gearbox and replace it with the reverse light switch out of your old gearbox. You CAN rewire the 6 speeds sensor but it’s slightly easier to just swap em.
4.) Remove all engine mounts from 6 speed and fit the front and rear engine mounts off your old gearbox. Leave the right (passenegers side) engine mount till later as it requires modification.
Fitting the gearbox –
1.) The 6 speed will physically bolt in the same as your old 5 speed. Except for the right hand engine mount (more on that later). Make sure to do all the usual stuff like a little bit of moly grease on the input shaft spline, grease the driveshaft seals etc etc
2.) The 6 speed has all the same mounting blocks cast into the top of the box as the old 5 speed for mounting the thermostat housing, earth strap etc to.
3.) Reuse the 5 speeds clutch slave cylinder rather than the 6 speed one as there is a strong chance the 6 speed unit may be corroded.
4.) Bolt the box up to the engine fitting everything but the right hand engine mount and don’t bolt the crossmemeber up to the body yet.
Modifications –
1.) Shifter – Disconnect the shifter cables and remove the shifter from the car (four bolts to the floor). Look at the left hand side of the shifter bracket as you move the gearstick from side to side and you’ll see two tags which are the end stops for the sideways movement of the shifter. Dis-assemble the shifter (four bolts surrounding the gearstick) to get the shifter linkages out of the way and then bend the forward tag forward (hammer will do the trick) so that it makes and angle of approx 30deg with the shifter bracket.
Reassemble the shifter and simulate it’s movement into reverse (up and to the left). When looking at the shifter from the top of the stick you’ll see that you need to relieve the cap that holds the shifter to the bracket by 1-2mm on the upper left hand side. Flip the shifter upside down and you’ll find you also need to relieve the bottom of the shifter bracket on the opposite side (lower right hand side) by the same amount. Do this a bit at a time, reassembling and refitting the shifter to the car to check that you can easily get reverse without the shifter fouling the bracket.
2.) Shifter linkage bracket – The bracket the the shifter linkages pivot off has a ridge which gets in the way of the engine mount plate. Hold the plate in place where it needs to sit and measure how much of the ridge to cut down, remove it and grind the part of the ridge that needs to be removed until it’s level with the reat of the bracket.
3.) Engine mount – Using the 5 speed AE92’s engine mount, It’s actually the plate that bolts to the top of the gearbox that needs to be modified. Fit the engine mount to the car with its centre bolt loosely in place then raise the engine and jam the engine mount plate in place to see where you need to redrill it., mark it and re-drill it then fit the engine mount.
Finish off the rest of the conversion as though simply refitting a gearbox.

And no, the blacktop gearboxes (both 5 speed C56 & 6 speed C160) are not standard LSD, it was an option from the factory.

You can use your old driveshafts in the 6-speed.
So you're saying the C56 driveshafts fit into the C160 and hubs with no issues? ie they're the same driveshafts? Interesting...

I'm saying you can use the C52 or C56 AE101 20V shafts in the C160, or you can even use AE92 C52 shafts if you like which is what I'm currently running until I sort out the 20V shaft braket mounting to my smallport 16V block.
Early AE101 20V's came with the C52 aswell, the later AE101 20V's had the C56.
You may have just helped along my C160 plans(/dreams?)![]()
