Securing your number plate

While in Highschool, i was known to associate with people who werent the most legal, which has given me an insight into what would work and what wouldnt. I know the people I hung out with generally kept allen keys with them... So I would rule out anything with allen keys, hex heads, standard phillips or flat. Torx are a bit more of a specialty too, but one that I came across which was great was a 5 sided allen key... they are used a lot on pushbikes for securing wheels (similar to quick release method). Anything that cant be undone without drilling is a nono in my book, as I dont want metal filings/sparks going around my pride and joy any more than they have to. So that rules out the one way screws. I would say just get the security torx screws, easy to get hold of, easy to get the tool, and most tools that are knockin off plates wont think about it. Some hot melt glue in the hole is easy to remove, but at midnight you cant see well enough to realise that its just hot melt in your way.

Just a warning for anyone with personalised plates to not bother making the plates unremovable.

The police were are the Brisbane car show this year they had a display with a number plate, one way screws and a screw driver for people to play on (try and undo).

Pretty sure you could the screws were free from them if you asked...

(I have no idea how they remove them, but I would guess drill )

i had to go to dicksmith to grab one of their little screw driver kit with all the weird bits on it..to take off a set of plates once.. it was a really weird head, but anyway that little tool kit went on to open up hard-disks and other odd screw heads

Yeha, these are the bastards I said I wouldnt want on my car. What are you gonna do when you need to pull the plates off and put shiny new ones on in 10 Yrs time?? Or when you get personalised?? My guess is you would be getting metal filings on your duco, then you need to use an easyout to get the bastards out. More trouble then what they can save you IMHO. Strange heads which require the sniff dick bit set like VIOS encountered are FTW. Ive never come across a would be plate stealer who carries one of those kits... its easier to go to the neighbors commodore and grab thier plates. Zippy ties arent much defence either, these can easily be removed, with your paint taking the brunt of the removal process.

Ummm surely if a theif wants to take your plates and cant get the screws undone he would just stick a screw driver between the plate and the car and pop them off... and this would cause a lot more damage!

Well that depends on the car. On a new crappy plastic car, if the plate is attached to said plastic body then it might come off. On an old car, like mine, where the plate is fixed to the actual metal bumper (on the front) and a riveted metal back plate (for the rear) then I doubt they'll be prying off the plates very quickly with a screw driver.

That and the plates are actually quite hardy. They will take a fair pounding before letting go where the screw is.

Those are fairly common one way screws... many security door / screen companies use them... they work pretty well in metal or with nyloc nuts on the back but if they are just bolted into plastic you can undo them with a normal flathead screwdriver.

Torx screwws should work a treat and you should be able to pull them off later....

i seem to remember seeing in a TRD catalouge seeing a set of locknut number plate bolts. used a wheel locknut stye socket/key
