quick brake question. mechanic sais calipers need to be overhauled?

if i had leaking from the seals because of the calipers
extending so much due to the pad wear.

is it possible for the fluid to just dribble out slowly??

or would it piss out piss out?

If your pads were worn enough to expose the seals you would have been metal to metal and a very thin disk, this is why minimum thickness is stamped/cast on all rotors.

I agree with your mate, if a caliper leaks from a blown seal it realy leaks.

I dunno how much cash you have, but... caliper repair kits for my rolla were only $30 a caliper, cheaper at trade prices. I say for piece of mind do them, I don't like fucking around where brakes are concerned. They're not that hard to do either, just borrow a torque wrench from a mate if you don't have one. Not sure how much a shop would charge to do them.

i'm just wondering if you mean that the calliper's piston ... that's a really cheap job to reco, what they did was take the piston, weld a new sleeve on it and then machined it so it fit nicely into the caliper.. 30 bucks sounds right.. involved a leak as well... sorry if i'm off track..

Its a bit of both really. One of my old Cressy calipers had a small piece of grit stuck in it so it only really leaked at full extension which wasnt overly often, of course it also leaked more at higher heat, and higher heat normally means higher speed, which means the fluid may be getting lost out into the airstream and you wont notice it.

Other times, like when a seal is kinked it will really piss out.

Oh hang on I'm one.
If the Caliper needs to be overhauled it is either due to the piston being siezed, dragging or the seal leaking. The piston seal can leak how ever the hell it wants to leak, it could be a slow weap or 'pissing out'. The later you will notice a lot sooner when you run out of fluid.

Things that can cause the piston seal to leak is age, dirt or grime, or pitting on the actuall piston surface due to moisture in the brakefluid. It's not uncommon for a small amount of fluid to weap out past the seal when retracting the piston, this can still be quiet safe when the job is commplete. All callipers have a dust boot covering the piston slide suface and thus preventing crap making it's way between the seal and the piston.

Just remember that Brake fluid is soluble in water. Sometimes driving in wet conditions can wash away possible traces of a fluid leak.
