Copper is definately an old school mod - my old man used to have a copper exhaust on his Austin A40 back when whippersnappering was a new trend. Unfortunately it fell off in front of the cops when going over a speed bump. Supposed to give a nicer exhaust note/tone but probably was the "rice" mod of the 60's.

For interests sake, the "rice" mod of the 40s/50s was to attach a train whistle to one side of an exhaust and have a cable operated valve to switch from quiet side to whistle! My grandfather did this on his 30's chevvy ute

yea an old dude told me of the copper exahust idea, he said it gave a nice cracking sound! however his was not a full copper exahust just a section of a foot or so. his mate also had a copper side pipe that was activated when he opened a large valve that was tapped into his original exahust system. the valve was just a 2 inch water cock with the spindle poking into the cabin!

when i was up in the NT in 95 a copper exhaust was still legal. that was because some high up dude in the parliment up there that had a copper exhaust on his pride and joy. (never did find out what type of car it was though).

A 2 inch water cock with the handle poking into the cabin, that really cracked me up.

Back in the days of my recalcitrant youth, 2" copper pipe from the extractors back was the GO. My old 1952 Holden (Aka FX) had a really raspy note. The local copper (pun intended), could hear me coming 5 k's away. Spent a couple of evenings as a guest of this guys establishment!!

But on a serious note, the carbon monoxide gas reacts with copper, and creates some kind of compound that the EPA will definately frown upon.( I knew what the shit was 40 years ago, too many beers since!)

I gather that a chemical reaction does indeed take place in the pipe, forming something nasty. I could probably ask my old man what actually forms. But yeah, if you want to stick one together for humour value, give it a go...

Probably not as bad these days with the lower sulfur content in fuels, but whats the bet it'd be making things like Copper Sulfate etc

It's definately plain old copper pipe ad nothing special. Wife's uncle told us about it a few years ago. He made a system for his MGB and yes it does make the note different. There are different grades of copper though but I am not an expert in that material. But annealed copper pipe is what most people know and annealing makes it very pliable which is what is normally used for household plumbing and so easily bent. I assume then that unannealed (if that is word) tube is stronger although not the same as similar thickness steel. This is plumber territory. Would still think that buying the copper pipe would be very expensive unless you can get some length from a scrapper. Have you got the tools to do it in copper??? You would have to buy copper bends as well as straight tube and you won't bend it very well unless you sand fill it and heat it. Would also think it would need to be silver soldered or whatever plumbers use. Ever tried soldering copper pipe, not as easy as first thought. Need oxy/LPG or a decent butane torch especially for bigger tube.
