If your camshaft/valves are ok, then you have head/head gasket/rings. either way, it looks like it's coming back out.
I have just finished putting a 2JZGE VVT-I in my 2002 Hiace SBV and she up and running, but as usual I have issues. I have got no bloody compression - 100 psi in no1, 60psi in no2 etc.
I have checked camshaft location (I changed the belt), valve clearances and all OK. The strange thing is that it does not blow smoke and the engine does not breathe heavy. I have had it on the dyno and it only makes 120hp at the wheels, which isn't bad considering the lack of compression. I am going to do a leak down test but other than that, does anybody have any ideas before I pull the bitch out and do rings and valves

If it feels good "DO IT" Unless it harms others.(or upsets the RTA)
Enjoy what you have To Day,cause you can't take it with you.

I just drove the thing from Brisbane to Tara and back and even though it lacks power it went like a train. Didn't use a drop of oil or water and the oil still looks brand new. the trip was 700k's.
Ok, head/head gasket sounds like it's gone between cylinders & your compression is passing from one cylinder to the other thus not affecting the water jacket or oil gallerys.
I had one do this on my "cooper S" when I was younger.
Anyone else got any other ideas?

Is it possible that the head gasket could be blown between all 6 cylinders and not any where else?
Have you done a compression test since doing a few kms, if a motor has been sitting around for a fair while it is not unusual to get some suspect compressions.
If you are doing a compression test and a cylnder is down on compression squirt a bit of oil into cylnder, if compression comes up with the addition of a bit of oil the rings are shot, the oil helps rings seal.
If you have a blown head gasket between cylnders will obviously have two cylnders adjacent with low compression, normaly the motor will miss badly, dought you would have done a 700km round trip with a blown head gasket without some major dramas.

Compression was the same and oil down the cylinder only increased compression by 5lb.
I just completed a leak down test and with 80psi going in no1 cylinder could only hold 20psi. With the throttle body off I could hear the air coming up from the valves. I wreckon that the previous owner may have washed the motor and with condensation all the valves may be pitted and not seating.
I tried no2 cylinder and it was worse with air once again coming up the plenum, so I will pull the head off first and get it seen to.
I pulled the head off and the head man said that the best valve was seating by only 50%.
He wreckons that the engine had a huge overheat and it warped the head. $800 later and she back on and has heaps of compression and runs much better.
The leak down tester was well worth its price as it isolated the problem. I used it on a SR20 the other day and you could hear the air escaping down into the sump, indicating that the rings were faulty.
This afternoon the Microtech ECU pooed itself and left me stranded, it completely lost it program. I'm p_s__d off.

So your not a Microtech fan. I tried and did as much research as I could before I chose a system and microtech seemed OK.Originally Posted by takai

Yeah, its more of a running thing. A lot of the other threads around have the "microtech can do no wrong" fanbois in them.
A Motec probably is a bit of an overkill, and theoretically an MT should be able to do it, if they were able to get it right. Maybe something like the Adaptronic or a Haltech E6X might serve your needs.

Some how I managed to lock out the ECU, anyway punch in the unlock code and I'm back on the road.
I have now done 50,000 k's with the 2J and it has been going great, but still lacks a bit of power. I now posses a 2JZGTE VVT-I, 'think I'll slip it in'
Pics please.....
