Sounds like more of an internal issue than linkages, but even still may pay off to remove the gearstick boot to watch the linkages moving as you change gear.
Description: st162 standard gearbox (s53?) it is in a 162
Problem: 3rd gear will not stay in under constant speed or decceleration, 2nd gear will also disengage at high or low rpm under the same circumstances (generally fine during mid range revs)
I've been told that this is most likely syncromesh problems, however I think there might be some other factor as the previous gearbox that was in the car also had the same problem with 3rd gear. Seen I have never driven any other st162 with this problem what else could be going wrong? Linkages, gear shifter mechanism? anything else?
Thanks

Hi
I have the same problem on a s53 trans, cept on my trans it was only the 2nd gear. I opened up the box, and i found the problem. The 2nd gears small synchro like teeths, thats supposed to lock into the shift hub, is very worn and edgy, wich makes the shifthub jump out off the 2nd gear when you acceleretate or let go off the throttle. theese small teeths thats worn, i think is a part of the synchro system, since its sits behind the synchro rings, but unfortunatly, this part isnt possible to buy like the synchro rings, and you have to buy the entire 2nd gear, wich cost a shit load of money.
since yours also have the same problem on 3rd, i assume you also need some new parts there.
You can use a S51 as a donor trans, wich you should be able to get cheap, and the job is pretty easy to do, but if you dont have a donor trans and have to buy new parts, i wouldnt even bother to start taking it apart.
