    Default Ra65 (wont Start)

ok i was just wondering if you guys could help me out, i have a 1984 RA65 that
i bought from VIC with what they thought was a cracked head so i bought another head
from RA65 from these forums.. the head has been shaved btw (not sure if thats going to
help) but i have had it put on and everything is set up...

checked the timming which is fine and checked the compression (only on 2 cyls though
as my compression tester wont reach #1 and #4 so #2 and #3 have 110 and 120psi in
    them....

the only thing we can think of is that the engine isnt getting any petrol, we know its getting
up to the EFI system but we think thats as far as its going....

we dont have all the vacum hoses on but most of them are (dont know where they all
go there is so many )

heres a vid of me trying to start the thing http://media.putfile.com/Celica-Trying-to-Start

    any help is appreciated

    1. battery's a bit weak...

    2. sounds like u need to complete that compression test IMO..

    3. fuel pump's running eh? if the fuel pump is running and it's not reaching your injectors, u've got a clog somewhere, best place to check is fuel filter.. when u say it's getting up to the EFI system it's a bit vague to tell what exactly u mean..

    4. Definitely need to connect the vaccum hoses up, if not some of them i believe can be blocked.. not sure which ones though..

if u wan to try something to test if it's petrol, a can of AERO-START is good.. give it a good spray and crank away... if she sputters or shows sign of life then yeap it's a fuel issue.. if nothing happens i'd be looking at your spark plugs and seeing if there is any spark...

    good luck mate

how long had it been sitting without being run?

    injectors might be jammed shut!

maybe try squirting some fuel down the throttle body and try it !
if it starts you knw you have a fuel issue.

*use an old spray and wipe bottle or something like that to squirt the fuel in.

Sure the timing is right ???

Use a decent battery. Make sure you have spark when cranking. Move the engine to the appropriate place, then take off the dizzy cap and make sure it's pointing fairly close to #1. Force feed it a bit of fuel (with a small tin of fuel fed into a vacuum hose, you can generally get the engine to run for a little bit as it sucks the tin dry.)

    best place to start is with the 3 basic things for an engine to run;
    1. fuel
    2. spark
    3. compression

1stly check to see if each is present then if there is a problem with one you can investigate more.

pull a lead off and put a plug in and check its sparking. then id squirt fuel through the TB.

the compression isnt great but sometimes engines get dry after time and loose some compression. best way to get the compression back up temporarily is to squirt some oil into the cylinder....it helps the rings to seal.

if it doesnt fire then there may be a timing error with respect to ignition. if it fires then id look more into the ECU and fuel delivery start of things

ok well it dosent seem to be compression, and it def has spark cos thats one of the1st things
i checked... the timming is def right

so tomorrow im going to change injectors see what happens...

and when you guys say spray some fuel into the TB you mean just take the pipe off and
    spray it in?

Feed some down the throttle, or take off a vacuum hose and let it suck it in for itself.

Watching out for the tiMMing - Tim mightn't like his name being used when you talk about tiMing;-)

sure the timing isnt one cycle out? ie 360 deg out

easiest way to check this is to remove the tappet cover and hand crank the engine until cylinder 1 inlet valve has depressed, then just shut.....at this point the dizzy should be firing cylinder 1......this should happen before the exahust valve begins to open for cylinder 1 though

are the injectors making clicking sounds when you crank them? you might need to hold one while a mate cranks the engine?

have you pulled the spark plugs to see if any have got petrol on them?

it's unlikely that all 4 injectors will die - it's more likely that something is not connected

do you have diagrams to help you connect all the vacuum pipes and wiring up?

    cheers,
    Charles

*meh* isn't that what i said? second post of this thread... seems everyone is repeating the same thing in different languages...

while u're checking out your injector problem, check for spark.. if there is, and you've got timing right, it's down to fuel... however i'd suggest you try to do a comp test on cylinder 1 and 4 just to be sure... otherwise ur efforts are going in the wrong direction if one of your cylinders has dropped compression...

fuel or aerostart down the throttle body and see if it kicks on...........
if you've got spark then you're half way there.......now just need fuel.
in saying that if the car has been sat for a while the tank of fuel may have gone bad and may need draining.........fuel does go off after a while.
